I like some toned coins...but this is not one of them. May be one of those "fake slabs". This coin sold for $90 in Sept. 2009 through TeleTrade; Superb Gem Uncirculated, of overall exceptional strike and luster. Attractive mottled red and blue-olive tones enhance the obverse....just not seeing the appeal.

I agree, not seeing it on this one. Even though it is the "second finest" it looks like it really took a beating and the hair looks kind of flat. Usually toning adds to the eye appeal, in this case I think it pretty much kills any eye appeal.

The picture may not be doing the toning justice on that. That said I'm guessing thats one that the toning used to look nice on but has since turned

As oih82w8 pointed out, it sold on TeleTrade back in 2009 for $90. 50C 1964 MS 66 PCGS Superb Gem Uncirculated, of overall exceptional strike and luster. Attractive mottled red and blue-olive tones enhance the obverse. Designed by Frank Gasparro, this coin was the last minted piece made of 90% silver. Description DOES match the ebay coin. I see the red, and blue-olive tones, but I don't see the grade or think that the toning adds anything to the coin at all. With 961 in MS-66 and 31 MS-67, I'm sure you could find a much better example for far less than the asking price of $236. Here are 2 MS-66s. (Est. $125-$150) http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...te=1&lot=815http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...te=1&lot=816And one at MS-67 (Est. $700 and UP) http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...e=1&lot=1565I like both the MS-66 coins better that the ebay listed coin and final cost should be about half. Now after that try picturing an MS-64 or -63. Based on that also an MS-60 would be a real mess.

I wouldn't pay that for ANY bootlegger half unless it was certified to have walked on the Moon.

I clicked on this old post for some reason and the OP's link happens to go to a different coin now. The PCGS ID is 25333418, just in case the ebay listing photos expire, you can view it here http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/25333418/ I would guess that the original link works because it's the same seller, but I could be wrong. The PCGS Cert list the value at $250 and the seller wants $9500. Now this coin does have some vivid toning, but does this make the coin worth 38 times the listed value? I have a couple of toned Peace dollars, but I didn't pay any extra for the toning. How do you figure the value of a toned coin over the value of a blast white coin of the same grade? I've seen 5 X to 10 X the listed value on toned coins as a guide, but 38 X the value? What would be the most you would pay for toning? Ben

Quote: How do you figure the value of a toned coin over the value of a blast white coin of the same grade? Its just whatever you think someone will pay. The toning in the PCGS pictures does show an attractive coin, but I agree 9k is a huge stretch. Theres 5 66+ and 33 graded higher. Its not rare enough to command some stupid premium like that for toning. I could see someone paying 1k maybe even approach 2k, but 9500 no chance.

Quote: Were the graders all asleep when this came through? This is only the 2nd finest so I guess the finest would be a lot sharper. I refrain from commenting on other dealers' listings as a matter of course and professional courtesy. But regarding the coin per se, it is in an MS66+ holder. It is neither second finest nor third finest. A friend of mine has the sole MS68 PCGS 1964-D Kennedy half, an incredible coin with color and surfaces that blow this one away. As far as I know and can determine, there are no MS67+ coins at PCGS. And I and some other top Registry Set collectors own MS67 examples, of which PCGS has certified 32, likely including some duplications. So this coin is somewhere around 34th finest.
