Hi, so I'm new to coin collecting and searching for error coins and after searching through $98 or quarters I found one coin that stood out. The word "of" in "United States Of America" is missing. So two question. Is this an example of Cud covering up the word? And second, because the entire word is missing would this coin be worth anything and if so what would be my best avenue for selling it? Thanks for any help.

It doesn't appear to be a Cud, but looks like the letters are missing due to grease in the die when the coin was made. That is fairly common, so it doesn't add value to the quarter.

+3 on Grease Filled Die. These are common. If you were to have the entire phrase "United States of America" missing then it would be worth a little premium but not a lot. There are some that are missing the entire side of the coin. Then you are talking a decent price for a coin.

Here's something I don't understand; why is it always a grease-filled die? Why can't it be, say... a coffee-filled die?
Picture this: A Mint employee is watching over one of the minting presses while drinking coffee. A hornet flies over and stings him on the neck at the moment the employee is taking a gulp of coffee. Immediately he jumps and cries out in pain(the employee, not the hornet) while spewing out the coffee from his mouth. A few drops land on the anvil die and fills up some crevices. Voila!
I mean, it could happen, right?

You may have something there It may not work on coffee alone, but may require coffee with cream and sugar.

Hopefully not a drug quarter, not packed in coffee grounds. My 1st thought was , but strike is very poor from and old die. So some details might have polished away before grease got in the way. Not a coin I'd want to collect. I think pennies are better to look at, and don't cost as much.

the problem with coffee is that it's not as thick as grease and therefore wouldn't have as much filling power as grease and would just be squirted out.

I use the term debris filled die. Even though grease is the culprit most of the time others types of debris could be involved. It is also a struck through debris coin though not like some with say a staple or other harder debris. Sometimes you find a coin with the debris still imbedded in the coin. More of a premium on those.
