Collect whatever you like, but I did that as a kid and all those coins aint worth jack. Looking back, I wish I had been less impulsive, saved my money, and sought out nice coins. Just some advice.

At 13 you still have to learn how to spend your money wisely. As I stated in my first response to you, I love your enthusiasm. But, best to save a few more bucks and buy a nicer example. Good luck.

Vermontensium....I thought this Forum was about learning and educating oneself. I was the same age as this young man when I started collecting, and, if my mentors would have expressed to me "all that should matter is that you like the coin", do you think that would have been good advice. I'd rather speak the truth about purchasing poor coins and offer advice like "save a few more bucks" as my mentors did with me.

Congratulations on your first copper purchase! If you like it, I think that is what is important right now. This is a coin to learn from, you will have time to upgrade as your collection grows (though I suspect this one will stay with you for a long time). There is a lot of knowledge on the forum that can help you with future purchases, just figure out what you want to collect and many will be happy to help. And remember everyone has different collecting goals, stay true to yours and you will never go wrong.

That's fine but he's young. Let him enjoy this coin. He may have spent more than this coin is worth but telling him it's worth 1 cent..give me a break already.
Yes, education is the key to collector success and one must learn in little steps first.
My advice to this young man would be to learn how to spot problem coins (as this one obviously is), learn the basic sheldon grading system for now, get some good books for educational purposes, and learn fair market values for certain coins.
You have to learn to walk before you can run. I was 12 when I started collecting coins and I know where you are coming from but in time, I believe he will make smarter purchases as he learns.

Large cents are a great coin to start with. There's a lot to learn, but it will pay off for you with due diligence. There's many websites that you can get info from. Educate yourself and enjoy yourself with this hobby.

CoinCollector2000,
One low-price online dealer has cull LC for $9.95 plus shipping. Yours is better than cull, plus you didn't pay shipping.

Well, I'm not going to be the nice guy here and tell cc2000 it was a good buy. It's better to learn the truth when you start than later on. And fuzzy, buying one step obove cull is nothing for him to be happy about. At 13 you learn quick, I did.

Ok guys, I appreciate the feedback! I'll try to make smarter purchases, but I'm not in a situation where I can fork over $160 for a nicer coin.

The great thing about a forum is everyone has an opinion. If you have never been skunked, then bully for you. Just because this is not what you would have purchased today does not mean it is not a decent purchase for this buyer. Rending your opinion in such a manner is not helpful, if anything I suspect you would have much to help him with if you have a softer touch for a beginner.

I really don't like when people sugar-coat stuff, so sometimes it's better to just be handed the straight facts. Sure this probably wasn't that good of a buy, but I just wanted to go out and get a older coin for a pretty low price, and that's what I did.
