So a coworker told me her boyfriend had gotten a bunch of old coins from his brother and asked if I was interested in looking at them, after I took a quick look I offered him $20 for the entire lot, and was rewarded with this.

Did-I-Score-Or-What?

After getting home a few hours later, I got a chance to actually sort through and see what I had gotten.

Did-I-Score-Or-What?
Did-I-Score-Or-What?

200 Wheats, dated 1940-1958, including one steelie
3 1964 JFK halves
1 1965 JFK half
1 1978 Ike dollar
1 1979 gold plated SBA
2 British Pennies
1 British Two Pence
1 Italian 5 Lire
1 Canadian Penny
3 various tokens
$5.33 in change that I'll be spending again, and...

Did-I-Score-Or-What?

An 1823 Large Cent, date is worn nearly flat but still visible when held at an angle in the light.

Not bad at all for $20!

Edit: Only now realized this could be seen as my bragging about ripping someone.. I'm probably going to tell her about the large cent in a few days when we see each other at work again.

The US part alone is worth $30-$35. Maybe you should get her (or the BF) something as thanks.

Nice score.I am no pro but the wear pattern seems a little odd.Why would the date be so worn?

Yup! The 1823 LC is a semi key. You could probably get $30 for it alone.

Yeah the wear on it has both myself and a collector friend a little stumped as well, looks like the coin has also taken a nice ding there in front of her neck.

Considering posting it over in the classics board to see what they think, and I can get a semi-decent shot of the date with a little camera work.

Let me see if I got this correct. They show some old coins and you didn't look at them thoroughly then offered $20. They in turn accepted, then you get home and find out that your "chance purchase" hit the jackpot and now others say

Heck no!
Now if you take turns buying lunch that's one thing but if not you don't owe them anything. (unless they're less than of normal intelligence) So enjoy your good fortune and ask if there are anymore to buy! KUDOS!

Extending the lunch Idea, just count how many times you've treated them to lunch as payment enough.

nice that you're going to tell the person, that is a hard call to make sometimes; you did after all buy the coins. I would probably not talk numbers but as a thank you ('for the coin I have been looking for') I would look for a nice bottle of wine. Keeping your mouth shut and never mentioning it again is another good option, depending on how well you know the person! Good score mate, I'm always waiting for that exact scenario... and I'm still waiting!

I don't think you owe anyone anything at all. Two adults came together with their eyes open and made a transaction, with both agreeing freely to the terms.

Wow you stole it. But then again, the seller set herself up for that. Perhaps if you're closer you should give her a bit more moolah. Coworker implies business.

do you think they would've given you any of your $20 back if you came up with nothing?

you took a chance, and so did they, by buying it more or less unsearched.

enjoy your coins you owe them nothing. in fact if you offer to up your compensation they might go thinking you really found something exremely valueable and you will be in the bad books.

So I told her that the cent was worth a bit more than I thoughtand more than what I paid them and offered to buy her a pack of smokes, she agreed to that and is still willing to bring me more coins in the future should she come across any.
Rest in Peace
