Hi everyone-
New to the forum and to collecting in general but learning a lot. Quick question- when purchasing a coin, what is the best place to look for an equivalent price- the Red Book, the blue book, or Coin World? I'm thinking Coin World has the most recent prices but since I'm so new I don't know which end is the best end to attack from? I've been buying with prices from the blue book or Coin World. Am I getting good prices or am I looking at it all wrong?
Any advice is much appreciated and thanks in advance!

Depending on what you're buying, past auction results may be a better choice. I look at Heritage, Teletrade, Great Collections and ebay to check pricing on a particular coin.

ebay auction results and numismedia are what I use. If ebay doesn't have a good history Ill check Heritage as well

I'm buying mostly ASE's and Morgans- I'm trying to acquire one from each date and mint- I believe this is called a "set"? I do not plan on selling them at all- passing them on to my kids instead- however, if I needed to sell them I want to make sure that I can resell them for more than what I paid for them. I only buy certified coins and even then buy NGC or PCGS only, and I mostly buy from ebay but have a couple of dealers that I purchase from as well. I've seen to been lucky and have been getting them for the wholesale prices (or at least I think thats what they are!). Any thoughts? Or am I going about this all wrong? Thanks Jay!

Thanks for the reply basebal- seems to be consistent with what everyone is saying to check! So I guess I can look at these same sites for resell value as well then eh?

I also check online dealers for a range of retail prices.

The markets do change over time, but ebay will give you accurate ranges for what you could expect reselling them on there. Especially the more recently sold ones.

Those pricing guides/e-Bay auctions mentioned are all good sources, but if you're collecting coins with an eye to future appreciation for your kids and grand kids, probably ASEs and (assuming) common date MS Morgan dollars aren't the best way to go, part of the joy of this hobby is enjoying the acquisitions you buy.

In my opinion, if you want to know generally what dealers base their buying/selling on, invest in a greysheet. Almost every dealer or seller I have ever dealt with used a greysheet. When you get in to really tough coins and precious metal coins, it may differ some, but for Morgans, it is the best place to determine prices. That combine with ebay and other auction results will give you a good idea for certified coins.

I collect the same thing Anthony, certified ASE's and used to have morgans, I buy all MS and PR 69 pcgs coins for my ASE set, I suggest looking at other coins and finding ones that you like... I got some advice from the president of the Alabama numismatic society once... he said "i'd rather buy one coin for $500.00 than buy a bunch of coins for $500.00, because that one coin is going to always be worth $500.00 and old coins are only getting more rare"...

I'm sure youll find your way and be extremely happy with your collection... happy huntings..... PEACE...
