Seems to be a little short on lustre for a red coin. A little brown in the leaves and legends, and relatively bright in the open fields. Perhaps a little wear on the orb at the top of the crown. Beard detail perhaps dulled a little, with minimal wear. AU55.

If it has not been cleaned then I would say AU 55

Whose standards do you want it graded by? Using US standards coins will grade ½ to a full grade higher. IMO since it's a Canadian coin you should use ICCS standards. That being the case I won't render an opinion since I'm trained in ANA grading standards.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to grade, I was thinking in the AU range.
On the cleaning, how can you tell? In hand, I cannot see any hairlines and it looks like some luster remains. I am not sure on full history of it (came from grandmother), but it is possible that it could have been cleaned, but not sure with what, as her other coins did not appear to be cleaned. Just trying to improve my grading skills and ability to identify problem coins with existing collection, thank you for your thoughts.

Maybe her other coins were not cleaned but the person from whom she obtained this coin, had previously cleaned it.

thank you and definitely possible, but what are signs that the coin has been cleaned? I am trying to learn what to look for.

The color is unnatural looking. Uncleaned copper coins will either have mint red color lustre, browns of various shades, or a combination of both. A dull or overly bright yellowish color isn't good.

Thank you Pokermandude. I think the yellowish color has more to do with the photographer, than the coin. In hand it is more of reddish brown and will now pay more attention to the color when posting. I found this chart on teletrade.com, do you know if a similar one exists for canadian coins? The color is closer to the midrange of the Red Brown lines, coins 4 to 6. I do have some obviously cleaned large pennies and they have the bright yellowish look to them.

Hi purelywasted, As a rule the fields are usually brighter than the devices, as you can see, yours has darkening around the letters and shinier in the field usually a sign of cleaning.
