I have now found 10 of these over the last year, and a magnifying glass is not needed to see these oddities.

JFK has two spikes on his nose that don't seem to line up with a REV clash overlay picture, and there is a raised device under the middle of the eagle's tail feathers on the REV (like its molting and dropping a feather).

What causes this? Since these are on a number of 1994s I have found, would these be something to be considered a legit variety?

Thanks for the education on that point.

Do you have any ideas on the reverse device? And do things like this get "reported" somewhere to see if they make for legit varieties (Dr. Wiles?).

What you are seeing is called die flow. This starts to appear on LDS (Late Die State) and VLDS (Very Late Die State) dies. This is equal to our wrinkles as we get old. The metal flowing to the rim during the strikes wears the die toward the rim.

As for reporting to be a variety, it is just part of all dies aging process. No premium for these as they happen on all dies coins after they reach that die state. A variety to me is created when the die is being made. All coins that are varieties come from a die that has that variety and all show that exact distinction through its life.

Some call stuff that they feel are varieties. The VAM's, over polished dies, cutsie names people give to die cracks/gouges. To me they are not varieties. They are normal die wear. Do we consider our wrinkles as making us a better human? They happen with age/circumstances/events and life's ups and downs. I know that some may disagree. That is their choice.

Just making sure I am understanding this. I see what I thought was called die flow (the wrinkles) all around the device and the bottom of the tail feathers. The centered. darker colored "device: I am referring to is the horizontal line in the pic under the feathers. It is an actually a raised item sticking up off the surface as high as the lettering/feathers, etc. This exact "device" is on all 10 of these I have found, in the same location and idenitcal in shape/size.

My uneducated mind was thinking it a gouge in the die that caused this crisply defines, raised "bar" ?

It could be a coin damage if it is indented on the coin. If it is raised it might be a die gouge. But sometimes die flow gets interrupted while flowing to the fields. (I haven't created the image of this yet. I've got the coin though.)

If it were die flow you would see it on the lower portion of the area in question. (I'm not seeing it in the image.)

Yes - it is definitely raised on all 10 of them that I have so far. I have found one without the front spikes on JFKs nose also - but just one.

I also noticed on one of them (sorry no pics) just recently that there is also some rasied area along the contour of the eagles bottom feathers reminiscent of a die crack.

Then it is probably a gouge if it is raised. From the image I couldn't tell if it was incuse or raised. Thanks for the information.
