I would like to get some opinions on this 1976-D Half Dollar I just pulled from mint packaging today. The obverse side appears to have some doubling on some of the letters in liberty and in all of the letters in IN GOD WE TRUST. On the Reverse side their appears to be a small delamination chip just above the center star.

It would be helpful if you just posted the pics to the thread instead of links.

Looks like a normal coin from what I can see on the images. Are you using a single light source? It looks like you have multiple light sources. This creates a new problem when you use more than one light source. It makes it look like something is there, when there is nothing there. The overall size of the devices appear normal from you images.

I can see something going on with that coin. I see notching, doubling and maybe even some tripling. The lighting is giving me some trouble though. As of now, with these pics I am going with MD.

Well after reexamining the whole coin pic, the G in the whole coin pic does not look doubled. Yet in the close up of the G it looks almost tripled. I'm now leaning towards a lighting issue like coop said.

I think its Machine Doubling. It looks like at the letters are MD, pointing towards where the bottom center where the date would be. Its very evident on the R and a few other sources

As for lighting, I use 2 light sources - some LED Lamps from Walmart - 12 bucks each. BUT - I arrange them in a fashion where they don't shadow or blur, unless that is the only way to show an issue on the coin. As many know - the correct lighting set up for each coin makes a BIG difference.

Using an overpowered magnifier can distort the images as well. = \

Two light sources create two different shadows. Best to have only one. Light and shadow remain constant that way. Turning the coin with two different light sources show different things as it rotates.

Good eye Coop,

I was using the LED lights built in to my cheap microscope. When I looked my other 1976-D Halves none of them showed that doubling effect so I didn't think about the light source causing the problem. Once I turned those off and just used a standard light there was no doubling visible.

I appreciate the feedback.
