This is a rather sad example of sg93's lovely coin, but there is a story linked to it!
How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Second-Edition!-Ended-At-1492-Waiting-On-1491
This battered 1950 penny is one of the first coins I remember collecting. In the couple of years before February 1971, I was saving as many different low-value British coins as I could afford from my pocket money. One day I was with my parents on a shopping trip to Marks & Spencer - I hated that store, as my Mother would spend ages looking at skirts and dresses! When my Father paid at the till, the bill came to 19 shillings and 11 pence, and he let me take the penny change. The cashier put this penny in my hand obverse-up, and I already knew enough about coins to realise that it could only be 1949, 1950 or 1951. When I turned it over, my emotions were mixed: I was delighted to get a key-date coin for free, but also very annoyed that anyone would intentionally damage such a scarce coin!
It has since been replaced in my album with a much better specimen, but I still keep it for sentimental reasons.

Here's a 1950 Hong Kong 10 cent piece. It was one of the first foreign coins I ever got, and I still have it! The rims are fine, but the image was scanned through the mylar it is in, so it looks odd.

you'all are great

Posting all these interesting coins, I really do like
seeing the different shilling coins. I know I have a few,
some in the 1700's.

But I never thought about getting a group of shillings that
are from different countries .... until now.

And the information being posted is very helpful, I need to make up a list of key date foreign coins ... I did not know
a 1950 GB penny was a better date.

Thanks again ... and keep posting

@GR58 with a bit of luck you could get a 1950 for less than what it's worth at the relevant grade, from my experience watching 1950's and 1951's on ebay.

anyway, seeing a key date in bad shape is painful enough, wouldn't like to imagine seeing a 1951 end up like that, although it'd make a great filler for a 'miser' like me who only goes for bargains :D

the 40's coming up soon. I've got a number of coins I'd like to share, that's if I can find them in the pile of 2x2's. been starting to collect coins from as many countries as were involved in WWII for 1945, can't decide what to post already.

I'll keep the British theme going. The reverse on this is one of my favorites.

Harry, your half crown is in a fair grade too (VF+) despite 20 odd years of circulation. I only have some Georges VI silver half crowns matching that grade. But those were withdrawn and hoarded after few years.

Half crowns always remind me of my grandma - apparently, when she was but a gel, she got an 'alf crown every week. Then she confided to me that she never got the hang of the maths involved. Apparently, "American English" is really just years of accumulated bad German accents!

It's kinda crusty but the only one I've ever found from my favorite pickin' source- the melt tub!
Yeah it's all squiggles and wriggles and if one of these ever showed up with a major die crack it would look like part of the inscription. Some collectors turn their noses up at coins they can't read, but it's a simple thing to learn to translate the dates and values on AH coins. Most of the major graphic symbols are country-specific, and as for all that squiggly writing, good luck. Most of it is just slogans and politics, worthy of being ignored unless you have a deep fascination with strange languages and cultures.

In that case, I must post one of my silver 1/2 crowns from the last years of the silvers. I thought they were pretty easy to find in XF or better though. after all they were hoarded after they started minting in CU-NI

mysilveryears ... I do have a couple coins similar to yours .. well as far as lines and for me not knowing how to figure out the year.

One is from Egypt ... 10 something, I think it is from
1910 to 1913 ... I have looked at it several times and
can not figure out the year.

Older Ottoman and Egyptian coins have got a funny regnal dating system! Here's the idea:

- The "main date" (4 digits) is the year of that monarch's coronation. This date doesn't change for that monarch's entire reign.
- The "regnal date" (1 or 2 digits) is how far you are into that monarch's particular reign. It can usually be found below the tughra (calligraphic signature, which all look similar) and above a little line of characters that I'm not sure of their meaning.

So, if Erdogan was crowned king in 2010, Erdogan's coins of 2013 would read "2010", but below his fancy signature, you would find the number "3", meaning Year 3 of Erdogan's Reign which began in 2010. If you can effectively spot Arabic numbers (it's usually easy, because unlike cursive Arabic script, the numbers are not connected to each other), you can look up the coin's type by the date of coronation, and then pin down the regnal year from there.
