Wow. I had a 1947 Balboa all ready to go as well. They must be a common coin. Here is the photo to prove it. Instead my official entry will be a lowly little farthing instead.

from a 4 year allied occupation strike series. those folks must not have gotten use to the absence of their swastikas, since this coin managed to survive so nicely. imagine the allies saying "alright that's enough of your childish nonsense" and just taking that swastika off haha

by the way, I like the little farthings, just the right reverse and details for the size, and they're lovely when BU. got a few of them myself, including a 1956 BU I got for a dollar or so, wish I could have posted it up

The (ugly looking) zinc WW II currency was still around in Belgium in 1947. So I turn to a nicer 1947 brass 5 Francs coin from Belgian Congo. The reverse shows that the "Bank of Belgian Congo" is the issuing authority (not the Belgian Mint). The obverse with the elephant (and date) is the same as on the 2 fr and 1 fr coin issued, both of which are more common.

Muddler That is a great looking half dollar, it will be good to see more like that.
I feel seeing your half dollars is going to make me want to upgrade mine.

Here is a copper peso from Chile. Most countries, when their pesos became base-metal, went with copper-nickel or similar gray alloys. Chile, though, made these fairly attractive pesos for a few years (although mine is not too nice): You might be thinking... "Bernardo O'Higgins? Shouldn't he be on an Irish coin?!" This also bothered me, but he was really a mixed Spanish/Irish founding father of Chile! I guess history is just full of these interesting asides.
