1942 Irish sixpence:

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Second-Edition!-Ended-At-1492-Waiting-On-1491

Modern Ireland struck its first coins in 1927. The farthing, halfpenny, penny, shilling, florin and halfcrown were the same size as their British equivalents - indeed, both British and Irish coins of these denominations tended to circulate together across both Northern and Southern Ireland until these coins were withdrawn. But insteand of minting small, 50% silver threepences and sixpences like Britain, Ireland issued chunkier nickel coins of these values. Although Ireland was neutral during WW2, its coinage was debased nonetheless: the 3d and 6d coins were changed to cupro-nickel, and mintage of the higher value coins was suspended in 1943: when they reappeared in 1951, they also were of cupro-nickel.

In 1942 and 1943, the US Denver and San Fransisco mints helped Australia mint the silver 3 pence coins. The Melbourne mint did mint some, but only 528K, so the 1942(m) is one of the keys in the Australia 3 Pence series.

This one is my son's. Corroded, but still cool.

Edited to add: The S and D mint marks are seen on the reverse, under the far right side of the ribbon under the date. Those with no mint mark are from Melbourne, like the one above.

The 5 Groschen story.

Why the Austrian Republic continued minting their 5 Groschen coins in zinc until the 1990's, heaven knows.
http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces744.html
Both 2 and 5 Groschen had long become completely obsolete by the change-over to the Euro, but nevertheless had remained legal tender.

When going through an coin lot kept in an envelope with old Austrian currency, I found one of those 5 Groschen coins dated 1950 and another dated 1942 (not surprisingly with a Swastika below the eagle). I checked and double-checked, but found no 5 Groschen minted in that year.

Imagine what I felt like, when finally realizing I was holding a german 5 Reichspfennig. The coin has the same diameter (19 mm) and weight a zinc 5 Groschen has.
http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1917.html
It had apparently been circulating disguised as 5 Groschen for three decades before ending up in the envelope.

Sorry, no pics taken for this one.

that Australian florin is gorgeous! I'm having a 1943 over soon. it's nice to have a work of art in a coin for little over melt value that's got some history. and it's .925!

I'm struggling to get the point of this rule. Help me out here.
I thought the point of the thread was to show coins.
What difference does it make if more than one is shown by the same person? It's just more eye candy and that's a bonus,eh. So far there doesn't seem to be any overwhelming tendency to flood the thread with multiple images.
The original intent was to keep one person from posting several coins in a row, hogging the stage (and thereby driving participants away). More to the point, I want to prevent people from putting several images in one post (which increases page load times and makes scrolling more difficult).

Keep in mind that the original "HFBCWG?" thread only allowed on coin per year, period.

Can the 'Rule #7' be modified to allow for multiple non-related coins within a single post? If not, I for one am going to have to make a lot of exclusionary choices as we move into the pre-WW2 years.
No. Adding to what I said above, having several images in one post is my own personal pet peeve.

All of this being said, I think that it would be okay to allow anyone to post another coin (or coins) for a given year. Just allow a few posts (okay, at least one post) in between. This should prevent abuse, right?

For anyone who really has twenty coins from one year to share, you can always post a separate thread. We love pictures and there is no reason why your coins cannot be shared! I would even allow one to post something like "Here is my xxxx contribution to this thread. This is my favourite year, so check out the others here <link>."

Is this okay? Comments are welcome!

Ultimately, I want to keep this thread moving at a manageable pace, so we can enjoy it and not feel overwhelmed.

Please change that to LATEST... there is always Hope!

Wonderful bit of news on the 3 pence coins xshift, glad to know. I have to wonder now if my '42 and '43 three pence's never even made it out of the US. Both D mint mark and BU, I had mostly just dismissed them as nice oddity's of mid-range foreign silver. Now I will know they are an other example of world domination and manifest destiny muscle flexing. If the British Iles fell then Australia, New Zealand, Canada and countless other Islands and holdings would have been essentially orphans. It had happened with Dutch, Belgian and French colonies after their home nations fell. The bombing of Darwin on 19 February 1942, often described as "Australia's Pearl Harbor" made quite clear that Japan wanted the entire Pacific. Maybe it was not just us trying to be helpful and make up for the short falls in currency production, but to get our foot in the door. Australia was not weak by any means, however in 'Total War' you need all the friends you can get. If there is ever a doubt about world domination realize there are more Chinese and English speaking people in the world than German and Japanese. If the coin had flipped the other way this website might be in German and Australia might be the largest producer of chrysanthemums for the Emperors' palaces. The bombing of Darwin can be seen dramatized in the movie "Australia" with Kidman and Jackman

Thanks for the clarification jbuck, I for one love being overwhelmed by the beauty of this post, thanks tons for starting it up again! But I have to agree lets not make a mess, links to other posts is the icing on this cake.

Forgot to say thanks to 'nalaberong' for the space metal story, I thought it was just a really big mine not a celestial neighbor come-a-knocking in recent millennia

Works for me. Thanks for taking the time to clarify.
The only shortcoming to this rule adjustment that I can see is that sometimes I post fairly late at night and am the last one to show something for the year. Hopefully when this happens I'll be forgiven for the occasional adjacent post.

Roll on, gang. It's only going to get better from here on back.

If you post something, and an amount of time passes (I will not say how long, could be seconds, could be hours) and you post again, I will do my best Sergeant Schultz impression.

Again, as long as everyone gets a fair chance at getting their coin drooled over.

"If you post it, they will drool" <paraphrased>
No posties, no droolies.

So that's settled, it will be great to see this thread get dripping wet. We could always emulate the 'Days Of" and post lines of dancing fruit !

I'm endeavoring to post things that either I did not have when the first round went by, or got shut out by the sometimes too-quick pace of that one.
Threads like this are meant to have fun with.
Carry on.
