I went to a Flea Market today and found a 1964 penny with Lincoln smoking a pipe. I heard about them before but never seen one. Does anyone have info on them

Sorry, computer will not download pictures.
Rest in Peace

Just surfing around I found several examples.

There's one for sale on the bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAP...t_574wt_1139

The copy claims that it is an error coin and that is untrue. It never left the mint looking like that. It has been counter stamped or otherwise engraved.

Fun to find but not an error coin and it is only worth whatever somebody is willing to pay.

These were sold as novelties back in the 60's and 70's through newspaper supplement ads in Sunday papers. Sold for less than a dollar (plus the inevitable shipping and handling charge). They were made by counter stamping the coin. There were others made, too. I remember a Lincoln facing Kennedy and a nifty little coincidences brochure outlining the similarities of their assassinations. They sold millions of these things.

There were even States series at that time:
Lincoln-Smoking-A-Pipe
Counter stamping coins has happened many times through the years. Some for advertisements. Others just to try out a letter punch kit. Some even were filed down and love tokens were made from them. Coins have been tortured for years.
