Anyone heard rumors, whispers in the wind? Or just flat out lies about what the mint may do for the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half dollar?

Mint staff told me during a conversation that there will be a four coin set at least. A second offering is being considered but wasn't a sure thing at the time ( mid October) which makes me think one set will have something gold in it, but that is a guess. What the style/type/finish will be was not divulged.

I think they should try to push halves back into circulation, and what better time than now, (I mean in 2014) with a Kennedy half redesign for the 50th Anniversary. I wish they would AT LEAST do bags and rolls of Kennedy halves with the front of the coin untouched, and the back with a new design, or even a four coin series throughout the year 2014, then in 2015, a permenant reverse design. At least with bags and rolls of the new designs, there would be a chance to spark interests in getting halves circulating again, as people would be after the new designs to collect. Just like I wonder if they will push the redesigned $2 bill into wider circulation, when it comes out in a decade or so, from now.

Ideally, I'm hoping for a 90% silver set with special reverses that depict important aspects of his life like: PT109 New Frontier Space race Civil rights November 22, 1963-a date many Americans still remember and its impact Something similar to the 2009 Lincolns. And since the US Mint loves doing reverses so much, why not take the standard Kennedy design and offer a reverse like the ASE and Buffalo that you can only get from ordering the set. Throw them in a nice box and offer them to the public.

I would doubt they will be able to do much with the basic design of the coin...assuming these will be legal tender 50ยข pieces, reason being...they can't legally remove the eagle from the reverse...it's a law, and I have seen no congressional approval for modifying the obverse. The only latitude they would have would be the finish...satin, proof, burnished, reverse proof, etc.... so I wouldn't expect anything dramatically different in the design. Now a $1 coin is a different story.... and the mystery goes on

I was thinking the same thing roller, but isn't nice to dream?
Even if the mint could, I don't think they would have enough time to gather design ideas then judge the designs, then make the dies and crank out the coins by the end of next year anyway.

In 2002, Canadian banks received double-dated (1952-2002, all coins of that year carried a double-date) half dollars commemorating the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II... the last time half dollars would be distributed directly to banks in quantity. It didn't work, but these 2002 halfs are fairly common and accessible... so maybe there will be a similar attempt at resurrection for the Kennedy half!

Since the half is NIFC and they don't release bags and rolls til the 3rd quarter I HOPE they will come out with a special edition coin or set and silver would be a plus.

Since we are into speculation in this thread...
There have been some who received a mint questionnaire about a special product offering for 2014. Some were asked about a 4 coin set made with silver and possible reverse proofs - with the coins being made at all 4 mints. Then there was also the idea floated of a clad set with special finishes from the 3 primary mints. (P D S)...
So far we have no official mint announcements... I am hoping for the 4 coin set myself.

I just called the U.S. Mint's customer care line a little while ago, and the lady I talked to, said she did not know what was definite with the Kennedy half for 2014, and she said that they will not know until December of this year. But then she said, "Why? What do you suggest?" and I said, "Well, I think they should mint a four reverse design series for 2014, similar the the 2009 Lincoln Cent and the 2004-2006 Jefferson nickel for general circulation, or at least sell them in bags and rolls, so that people like me can buy the new designs and spend them to try to bring the Kennedy half a little more out of oblivion and then, of course, revert to a new permanent design on the reverse of the 2015 and beyond, Kennedy halves" and she said "Well, we won't know what will go on until December" and I just thanked her for the information and asked her where to look for information, if anything new does come out, and she said "Probably in the "Learn" section, and at least it "seems" like they take potential buyers's ideas under consideration.

I would like to see the 2014 Kennedy halves be minted in their original silver composition with P, D, and S coins. Since these aren't issued for circulation anyways why not have them be silver? I'm not really into these different coin finishes. Just the basic business strike is good enough for me.
