True, its not for your average every day hobbyist...takes a serious collector for sets like this. The seller has several great PL sets but this is the grand daddy

Too risky at that price due to lack of grading detail.

Pics are not great, and usually this seller's are. Some of the coins appear to be business strikes, not PL.Others appear to be worn.Caveat emptor. This type of item is best purchased in hand.

DBM.. Thanks for your insight on this offering.
Could you add any more insight on the 1953 dollar showing as the 2nd pic. I'm asking because info on a 53 PL dollar seems hard to find. Thanks...

I understand your concerns however I know this seller and can almost guarantee that the coins ARE genuine PL's. She would be more than happy to get you better picture if you asked I'm sure.

For one thing the '53 quarter shown is NSF,I may be wrong but all '53PL quarters I've seen are SF. The most expensive lesson I learned in this hobby was trying to find a '53 PL set.Unopened sets from the mint can contain anywhere from 0 to 6 PL coins, very few contain all 6.Most sets of '53 PL coins have been made up individually.

DEVLEC,like the quarter the few dollars I've seen were SF,doesn't mean they don't exist in NSF,just that SF does exist.

Regarding the sale of 1953 'PL' sets and/or 1953 'PL' dollars on ebay....99% of the time they're business strikes.

So, in 1953 the mint randomly made up PL sets with PL and business strike coins? Was this from the start, or did they start substituting somewhere into the run?

I bought a set like this from a dealer about 3 years ago. I was in this exact holder only in white. (I sold the holder on ebay for $20) I bought the set for $230.00. The coins were not all Proof Like but some were. All of the coins were in BU or UNC condition. The set is tough to store so I removed all of the coins. It was a no-brainer for me to buy it. Paid at that time, not much over melt for it.

I like the set that is being offered. But I would prefer that it was broken up into the years. Seems like a lot of money to spend when what your buying is the 1953 set. The 1960-64's are BV at best Plus the holder - it's great as a presentation piece, but where do you store something like this? I don't think you want to hang it on the wall.
