I found this 1989 D half in a recent roll search. I understand from another great forum that in the 70's and 80's the mint mark was hand punched into the dies, resulting in a variety of mint mark positions. This one seems extreme to me. I would have thought this die would not have been used for long, but I may be wrong! I was just wondering if anyone else out there has an example of this die variety?(if that is the proper nomenclature) or if it's just so common or insignificant that it's not worth noting! I don't know but I would keep it! That's very cool.

Thanks 1962penny! I guess 50 cents one way or the other won't make or break a person. I'm thinking I will hold on to it for a while.

Nice find! I found one where the mint mark was about that far off from "normal", but I have no idea what happened to it. Unfortunately, I don't think many collectors are willing to pay more than face. Still worth keeping, imo.

I got the low hanger part, but 54 of 72 in your 7070--you've got to be kidding me! Seriously, I have absolutely NO idea what a 54 of 72 in your 7070 means! Thanks for your reply.

Yep, it's a keeper. Check past auctions on ebay to gauge its value.

Thanks for your reply. that's the "signature." it means has 54 of the 72 available holes filled in his type set ( dances model number for that album is 7070).

Out of roll searching 189 boxes over the past year and a half I have one seen 341 1989-Ds and checked each one under my microscope of the known re-punched mint mark variety. I have one that might be an RPM but I am not sure (some day will post pics and make thread asking about it).
But if I had seen one like yours I likely would have kept it. You might want to look close and see if yours is an RPM.
