Hi, I bought this nickel on ebay already. I afraid its worthless 1912 d not the 1912 s like the man was selling. Can you tell from photes If an 1912 s or 1912 d. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...280121160451 I needed an 1912 san f. since it was key in those nickel books from 1883 thru 1912. I need to buy 1885 and 1886 next to finish it. I need to know if need return it or turn it over to paypal to get my money back. Thanks Chevrolet454ss

The seller's photos are pretty poor, but it does look like an 1912 S.

Wow, I think its 1912 s after checking serval times to my 1912 d nickel. I just wanted to make sure. Reason why its so hard see the s on it. Its very old wore out nickel. Its amazing the us mint onley minted 238,000 of them in 1912. I looked at my locol coin shops in houston and they never had any. I feel luckey I bought this one for what I bought it for. I looked at serval others on ebay before this one. Most the other coins for set I geting them for around buck per nickel. My quastion is why those Liberty nickels sets 1883 thru 1912 not all Popular in collecting them ? Its seems very few coin shops even sell them. I have seen lots of other dealers on ebay try sell tons that stuff cheap. Complete sets going below bid on greysheat on ebay in last few monlths. Its like they are dead products out there. Key dates going super cheap compared 1913 thru 1938 nickels or other keys dates like in penny books, Mercury dime books such as 1916d, 1877 penny, 1909 svb penny, 1914d penny. You get the idea. Why is that with the 1883 thru 1912 nickel book ?. I bought them since I finished my Jefferson nickel set and wanted to try to get complete run of nickels for last 125 years. I am scared to build the 1913 thru 1938 nickel run with prices like they are sometimes. I may try to build the nickel book before 1883 next. My goal is have one nickel set complete for last 150 years or so. Chevrolet 454ss Thanks again for your help.

Susan, I love deciphering bad photos, as you did. I do it with major errors (and fake errors) all the time.
Bad photography from sellers and knowledge of photography (and photoshop) can lead to real bargains.

I agree its an filled s like susan said, I am happy with nickel and I lefht him good feedback on it. I checked other stuff he sold. If knew about it. I could bought 26 V nickels from him at 16 bucks . That had lots old dates like 1884 with lots 1899 thru 1912 dates. That 1884 date is hard one also. I need 11 to more finish my nickel book. For whatever reason those V nickels are cheaper . Thanks

The Liberty nickel was not a coin that held up well in circulation that is why you see so many in grades g-4 to g-8. And the higher grades cost so much more people just can't afford them. I have three ms-60 Liberty nickels and in that grade they do look beautiful.

I also see an S. It was a little difficult to make out due to the sellers poor photos.

That's how I've found some great deals. I got an 1804 spiked chin Half Cent due to messing with bad pics for around $30 a few years back. I was then able to sell it for $110 on ebay.

It looks like an S-mint to me. Congratulations on winning it. It looks like it didn't go for too much money. I own a 12-S myself. I picked this up at last years ANA and I know I paid way too much for it. I bought it as a F15. I agree that it's a low mintage sleeper that is not always available.

You have my sympathy as to collecting those Nickels. True it appears as an S so at least you are lucky there. I too always wonder why such a low interest in that coin. I go to many coin shows and that is one of the coins that just doesn't sell. At one coin show not long ago a dealer I no fairly well gave me 2 Whitman Albums of those Nickels with over half full of F12 or better grades and for free. Naturally none of the Nickels were the rarer ones. I did buy a few of the missing ones so now both Albums are only missing about 5 coins. I think they are nice looking but just not a big collecting coin for some strange reason. I've asked many dealers and they all agree not a big seller and also don't know why.

carl: It only took from 1892 until a few years ago for the Barber quarters to take off, and then a year more for the half dollars, perhaps soon the dimes will move and then the nickels.

Wow, I checked jakes coin shop online. There buy price on that 1912 s was 140 bucks at vg-8 like you were saying. I guess I bought it for wholesale price or what coin shop buy price. I did not know that when I bought it. Its nice to know I did overpay on it like I did serval times before on other coins. I am learning about grading from reading susans website on coins. Its very good going by ANA grading skills. thanks chevrolet
