Hey everybody I'm new to collecting. I was looking through some change the other day and found a 1947 nickel thought I would check it out and saw the dot version after searching my house for hours found a magnifying glass for fixing glasses and saw that it was a maple leaf but it got me thinking so I searched several jars of change separated all the denominations and kept all the pre 82 stuff I got lots five silver quarters lots of pennies and nickels but now I have read about grading so do ii keep all these or do I just hold them. either way now I'm hooked cant stop looking at all my change I get wife keeps calling me a dork.

Freemike1115, tell your wife, "Dear, it's either coin collecting or hanging out with the boy's at the local pub, you choose"?
I wonder what her answer will be!

As @glenzy1 says, if you're at the kitchen table sorting coins at least she knows where you are!
As per @lambecolin check out the grading guide with pictures at http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-grading.php and the price guide at http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php Have fun!

Welcome.. enjoy the hobby...have fun with it...

Collect what interest you... decide on how you want your collection to look like.. and don't worry what your wife thinks...

Two years ago I was kinda looking to slow my pace and do something for my newborn... I thought coins would be a neat thing.. so I started accumulating (wouldn't even call it collecting as I was buying almost anything and everything with little direction)..

Now my wife loves that she knows where I am.. and what I'm doing.. and funny thing is.. she now knows some common errors and key dates. It will rub off.. and everyone will enjoy it!

Good luck and hope to hear more from ya!

She might think I'm a double dork but I did get her hooked on U.S. State Quarters as I was doing roll hunting for Canadian Quarters!

I started doing that too. Found a few, figured it would be easy - 50 states, 50 quarters. How hard could that be? Oops.

50 States, 100 quarters. My wife has an album and is collecting both mint marks. She started in the spring and has 80% of them. Almost all from finds in quarter rolls from the bank. And that is difficult when you live in Canada. Once you are at 80% though, most of the finds are repeats.

Welcome freemike. Start slowly and take some time to figure out where you want to go wtih this. Do you want to be a"hoarder" or a "collector"?

@ punman

There's also DC and the Territorial Possessions.

And then you get one with an S mint mark...

And lest I forget, welcome freemike; I'm not attempting to hijack your thread. But like Mrs. punman's search for State Quarters, it's the hunt that's the fun part.

Just remember though - once you start you can never stop.
