Hello all, wondering your thoughts on this one. It weighs 5.1g, is the same diameter and thickness of a nickel. It is non magnetic and looks to be made of copper. Thank you for the help.

Weird. I have no expertise in the matter but I'd sure love to own one.
Rest in Peace

Interesting. Maybe made by a private mint or company.

Does the ANA have an example, or a photo record of it?
If this piece is the product of the U.S. Mint, they or the ANA, would almost CERTAINLY have some information on it.

Krause also maintains a reasonably good photo record of U.S. Mint trials and patterns.

Because of their high potential value, private copies (fakes?) are sometimes made of these.

Another possibility is that it may just be a private fantasy piece. If that is the case, perhaps no record of it may exist.

The logo reminds me of a Franklin Mint mark. Is that tiny, tiny writing underneath it?

That is a beautiful piece IMHO. In digging a little bit about trial pieces, I found this article in Coin World: Mint begins trials strikes in composition tests http://www.coinworld.com/articles/m...osition-test

Has anyone viewed the trial patterns?

While I really like your specimen, I am a little doubtful that it is a trial piece...but one can hope!

Not them unfortunately.

This piece looks more like a cast than struck, any way to get a close up of the lone obverse mark?

What's the stuff over Monticello? Clouds? Almost looks like it may have been struck over another coin or medallion perhaps?

A Monticello token of some sort but the fact of the IGWT and EPU motto, the inclusion of the FIVE CENTS say otherwise.

Very interesting what ever it is.

Initially I thought it looked like a modified version of the 1937 Felix Schlag art-deco design to me: https://goccf.com/t/158239

An ultra high res shot of the 7 o'clock position on the "blank" side may reveal some info. One thing to note...on the Monticello side..there is a die crack at 1 o'clock, which makes me think that there were many of these struck in order to crack a die as well as some die wear evident around the rim area. Seems to me that this wasn't a low volume issue

I looked at the description of when I bought it. It says that it was a US test nickel from the Interbranch Mint for Toronto, On. So would that make this a fantasy piece. I do not know if the US allowed outside mints strike US test coins. I was thinking the same as (westcoin) stated about putting the EPU and IGWT and 5 CENTS on the coin.

If you look at the hallmark on the "blank" side...it looks a heck of a lot like the central mark on this coin as well (right side of image)

The Toronto aspect seems to hold up

My guess would be that this is a privately made example of one of the 1938 Jefferson nickel proposed designs. There are about four or five of the contest entries that have been made by various companies during the past ten years or so.

In reviewing all of the previous posts in this thread, I have a feeling that this piece is not a product of the U.S. Mint.
I will admit that my knowledge in this area is scant.
