What's up with this one. It's a 1916, and "almost" has a "D" mint mark ... except it's too small and in the wrong place.

Paid 6.50 for it out of curiosity.

Any thoughts?

A friend of mine told me a story about a guy years ago who would shave the mint mark from another dime and glue it in place on a Philly minted dime. He said once he was at a show and kinda "picked" at the mint mark on a 16-D and it "flew off". It was actually found after some searching, and as I recall, he told me the guy got in big time trouble for that stuff.

Anyway ... that's just a side story. I don't think that's what's going on here, but it's sure odd.

Interesting. I wonder if it's the remnants of a die clash event or better yet, the glue remains of what you described. I read once where a glued mm can migrate over time.

I have no idea. I have tried envisioning everything form a flip strike to a simple clash ... and can't figure it out.

But ... I'm reminded of a time I bought a Seated half dollar that (from the pictures) clearly had a gash across the shiedd ... except that when it got here, there was no gash at all, so maybe it's just digital trickery. I've been taken in by it before, and likely will be again, but with such a small amount of money involved ... I'll chock it up to entertainment. That coin's nicer than the 1916 Philly in my No 2 set ... so it can go in that album if nothing else.

Maybe somebody knows ... or has noticed it as well ... but the 1916 and 1917 Walkers and Mercury dimes seem to have a wider rim, which is a feature I really like. Also, the 1916 merc seems to be struck in higher relief...or the fields are more elegantly "concave".

Been away ... quite literally "flirting with a heart attack" .. but got this one in, and while the surface is raised in the area by the stem ... it's not as prominent as the jpeg would lead you to think. It's a decent coin for 6.95 (not 6.50) though. I had it in my watch pocket of my jeans for a couple days and the "sneeze" specks ... are about gone.
