Through my numerous exploits in Canada, I have never received one or seen one given in change. How often have you folks seen them in change, if at all?

I have never received one in 43 years...its not common practise to use them for change. Maybe at a coin show but other than that you might have more luck winning the lottery lol

My coin dealer's shop was the only place that have me a 50 cent piece in my change.the worker was only about 20 years old and gave it'll me so casually. Didn't even realize I had til I got home and put my change in the jar.

Very rare. In the past decade, I received it in just a single instance! I hear Canada post offices used to hand them off as change to inspire their use, but most people still falsely believe it to be a withdrawn coin. I don't think they (Canada post) do that anymore. Also, I don't see the govt. or the mint taking any steps towards popularizing the circulation of this coin.

I try to use them myself, but I only get them from coin stores. It happens fairly frequently, though, because I am an impressionable youth.

Very very rare, almost impossible. Because RCM sell it in double price! If it cost you 1 dollar to get a 50-cent, would you spend it just like a half-dollar?

Good point. RCM is greedy for money.

Half dollar size 50 cent pieces are VERY commonly used in circulation in Australia.

Sometimes I will go into the bank and see if they have any around. Sometimes they do (the nickel ones) and I will get $20 worth. The cafeteria at work was not too pleased to take them when I bought lunch. I often leave a tip in a restaurant in 50 cent pieces. It drives my wife crazy when I do that. Some people think it is cool to receive one. Many don't know what it is. I grew up in the 1960s. They were not that common then either.

Lol...punman...be careful on driving the wife crazy. You are right on Australia, sel_69l. I remember getting them in change very commonly in Australia and vending machines taking them. It's a really big coin and it was amazing that it circulated so well.

I've never gotten one. Although I did spend one at an indie movie rental store about 6 years ago. The clerk didn't even bat an eye when accepting it at face value. I probably should have asked her if she collected coins.

Haven't got one in change since the early '80s. DoubleEagle20, they haven't been issued for circulation in more than ten years.
