Quote: Half dollar size 50 cent pieces are VERY commonly used in circulation in Australia. Well, you do have 20 Cent coins and not quarters in circulation (as in the Euro zone where there are 20c and 50c coins in circulation). Where there are quarters in circulation a 50 Cent coin doesn't really make sense.

Last time I saw them circulated was in the late 70's early 80's at the Canadian National Exhibition in.

I don't even recall ever receiving one when I worked at the bank in the late '80s and I've never received one in change.

Same for our 50 cent piece, DBM. They haven't been minted for circulation since 2001. However, our old ones circulate a bit more than yours. I get one in change probably about every 6 months or so. Banks usually have them if you ask as well.

I remember getting a few in change back in 2002, when they issued those special 50 cent pieces for the 50th anniversary of QEII's reign. I have 3 or 4 of them, some store gave them out fairly regularly, I think they had a deal with the mint. Shoppers Drug Mart maybe? Anyways, here's a blurb from Wiki about that 2002 one: "A largely unsuccessful attempt was made by the Royal Canadian Mint to promote the use of the coin when a special edition was released in 2002 marking the 50th anniversary of the accession of Elizabeth II to the throne. After this failed promotion, the mint stopped distributing 50 cent pieces to banks, and now only sells them in rolls or in coin sets available directly from their Numismatic Department

I'm 44 and I have never had a 50 cent piece yet. I have also asked my bank for some and they have told me that they do not have any other than when someone brings them in

I am well into my sixties now. I did get nickel half dollars in change up until the 80s but only a very few times since. I think the store was just anxious to get rid of one that they took into their till. When I was a young collector in the 50s & 60s I often received silver half dollars in change. I did save a few George VI in nice condition and have them to this day. In the mid 70s I bought a sealed mint bag of 63 half dollars. I wish I had kept that bag today! It was tough as a kid to put a half dollar into your collection as they had considerable buying power back then. You could buy something and get change back from the half dollar. Reportedly, here in Victoria in the late 50s or early sixties, someone received a 1921 half dollar in change from the bus driver. It caused quite a sensation and I remember everyone was checking their halves for a long time after that! Older collectors and dealers here still remember that.

You are right on the purchasing power of 50 cents, oldcoinguy. Even into the early to mid 1970's it still bought a decent amount of candy or something meaningful for a kid. Now they don't buy squat. It takes a stack of six of them in the States to buy just one gallon of gas. Probably a stack of ten to do the same in Ontario. I do remember our halves circulating more in the 1970's. As the vending industry increased and they didn't take halves, that pretty much killed them as a circulating coin. Even if they don't circulate, the silver and pure nickel 50's are fun to collect.

I know that the nickel 50's work in some of the parking metres across Canada as a substitute for toonies.

I haven't received any 50 cent coins for many, many years. Not since I was 10, and that's 40 yrs. ago!

The only time I remember receiving a 50¢, other place than a coin show, was back in the 70's at Blue Bonnets, a horse racing track in Montreal. In 2002 I had a business and I had a lot of fun with the postmaster and took a few rolls of 50¢ that I gave in change for my customers.
