Hello all,

I am fairly new to coin collecting. I purchased a large quantity of old "foreign" coins at an auction and was surprised when I was sifting through that many were in fact, US coins (Buffalo, Mercury dimes, standing, Morgan's), so I definitely got my money's worth (this was not sophisticated auction.)

What got my attention was the 1776 Continental Curency with 1 R in Currency. I quickly dismissed it once I read about the sheer volume of copies, but I decided to research some more.

What are your thoughts:

Material: Pewter with high lead content (can write your name by barely pressing down)
Diameter: 37mm
Weight: 14.8g
Note: appears circulated and probably cleaned at some point

I brought to dealer who was listed on NGC, who quickly dismissed it. I asked why, he said "It is not copper - all were copper". I said, "no, many were Pewter". He said "that's Pewter, but they were all copper". So, I am not taking his word...

(note: took with my iPhone: colors look diff, most accurate is the front and back pics).

John-

Thanks...did not notice. On the topic of the coin, there are no marks which read "Copy" or an R for "Reproduction".

to CCF. They did not have to put COPY on it until a certain date, don't remember that date sorry. The pics are a bit blurry and I am no pro, that being said it has the look of being cast. Wait for a pro to comment though.

I think the planchet is a bit small....should be closer to 41mm. The edge should be ornamented with twin olive leaves. My guess would be modern repro...

I have never heard the olive leaves on any of the real coins and I think the likely hood of this being real is slim (perhaps an old repro due to the lead content?) The diameter of the real pewter is between 36-40mm and the weight is 14-17g - according to NCG.

What is throwing me off is that the weight/measurements are pretty spot-on and the high amount of lead would make it unlikely for a recent repro if that is in fact what it is.

From Amida's link above:

"I should caution you I have 2-3 requests per week from individuals who think they have original "Continental Dollars." Statistically, based on the rarity of original examples and the large quantity of replicas, it is probable your coin may be a copy. Varieties with both the correct spelling (Currency) and the misspellings (Curency and Currencey) have been extensively copied. "

Not real.

And MOST of the real ones are pewter. There are VERY few copper or silver ones. You dealer was probably thinking of the Fugio cents which have a very similar design.

Thanks folks...you are all great and I look forward to learning more from you all. I will likely bring the coin to my jeweler, who I just found out is NGC certified. I think the chances of it being real are .00000001% - I do think that it is an older repro based on the metal (I read they made many repros in 1876 for 100 yr). It would be more for curiosity.

If anyone has any more feedback (all feedback is good - even if it is a nope!) - love reading it.

Looks to be an older cast counterfeit. Welcome to the CCF!
