You did great. You made your mother-in-law happy and she DID offer them to you, rahter than dumping them and telling you about it later and that is certainly worth something. I think it would be great fun to have all those ... whee! but I enjoy searching for varieties. If you over-paid a little, you over-paid someone in your family, and therefore, so what?

Quote: If you over-paid a little, you over-paid someone in your family, and therefore, so what? I bought a bunch of stuff from my parents that belonged to my grandfather. They were going to sell to a LCS as they needed the cash but I happily gave them slightly more than they were worth just to make sure I kept them in the family.

Quote: Looks to me like they are mostly 40s/50s, so just common dates. Look at the back corner of the second picture. Is that a roll of 1903? Do some of those in the back say teens with s's? Could you get a closer picture please? I would say you did great, however, if it turns out like I think I saw, it could be phenomenal.

I would have offered Three Cents each. Are you going to look for errors and varieties? John1

Here are some answers to your questions: 1. I will be looking for varieties from this purchase, although I am not too familiar yet with what to look for. It will be fun searching though. 2. The 1903 roll only has one Indian Head in it. Darn! 3. The 1924 P & D roll - I was able to look through it last night quickly. I wanted to find the 24 D. Unfortunately, the penny's were all 24 P. 4. Here is a blow up of the early rolls.

You over-paid for the 1940-1958 coins, and under-paid for the 1909-1930. The money stays in your family either way, so I'd say it's a win-win. Also, if that really is a roll of 1903 IHC's, that'll make up the difference right there; Indian cents tend to go for about $1 each on ebay. Also, for the sake of ethics, I'd say give your mother in law a cut if you find any 09-s VDB, 14-D, 22-plain, or 55-DDO. This looks to be a hoard of common dates, but I don't think it's fair to pay 4 cents for a coin that'll sell for $500.

I personally don't think you overpaid for any of them, but that's just me. Did any of the 1909-1915's have an s or d mint mark?

A lot of the value, don't forget, is the thrill of the hunt even if you turn up empty on big hits. Being a kid has priceless value and th fun for less than a few movies. I do see some S mints in there!

I woulda jumped all over those at that price. Even if they are all common, low-grade dates you didn't do all that bad and the thrill of the hunt and the possibility that there are some old AU's or BU's in there is more than worth it. Hopefully husband #6 is a coin collector too.

Yeah, looks like a lot of semi-key dates in there. No way you overpaid whether you want to sell them or keep them you are good-to-go. Just the labor alone, that someone put into collecting that, was worth the $.

You didn't overpay. He collected all these and probably put many more in books. I would speculate these are duplicates and he kept the books with him.
I have a similar collection and I would never sell mine for .04 each. You did good!!
