Hi there, I'm new to this website but I'm desperately clueless and in need of help!! My father has a very large collection of coins, but he has them all each in boxes and containers stored away in a way that he can't even tell what he has anymore.
For his birthday I would love to buy him some kind of organizer so that he can keep his collection all in one place and keep track and catalogue of everything he has.
I have looked online and seen that there are various softwares which help keep track of what you have, but he is not very tech-savvy and I'm looking for something more of some kind of special notebook that helps him record what he has or maybe a binder of some kind that holds the coins in place while still keeping them safe?
I'm really not sure what to do but I think he would really appreciate to be able to fully see his collection for once. What are some things that you guys do in order to organize your collections and what would you recommend he use?
Thanks so much, Sofia

I keep my canadian coins in binder (Same as school), each binder has different denom(25c), in 2X2 holders, in pockets by year rows, that way each year (And only one) only one not several coins same year....In my book I try to put the shiny ones (Best), and sell or trade others...Although I am lacking here as I want to sell only in years to come,,,those coins are still wrapped (2X2) and then they are in tins....Maybe keeps demon's in separate tins,,,I place a white towel thing in bottom of tin as a cusion.. Do not be mad, alarmed, concerned, or whatever if pops has ten of same year and variety. This is great actually...coin checklists can tell yu which year has 2 or 3 varieties and then yu know what is missing and what yu dad has...Yu need these checklist sheets (By your post I know) for sure,,They can be photocopied free from about.com (US and Canada both)...Coin catalogues also hav this info but in a different way though with current prices if currant book (Library has catalogue)...My collection is still unrulely at times, but sorted out by denomination I guess,,,,,1900 to 2000 all in one book and one tin,,,,,certain denoms more coins then bigger tin box....I still say sell some?even if I don't take my own advise..... I also use black coin friendly boxes that perfectly fit the 2X2's, each box here can fit lots of 2x2's...... have to buy plastic pages, white holders @x2, long narrow coin boxes. paper pages of checklist for denom and country,,....Then yu look at sheet to decide what yu wish to buy in future...

Notebook binders with the 2x2 plastic holder pages would be very nice. Also, if he is not tech savvy, why not just buy him a ledger book? I use this as a backup to computer software or when I am out shopping.

Assuming that you are totally lost, this will help with the discussion at hand: 2 X 2 Cardboard holders Vinyl Pages: Binders: (Should be a little larger that a school binder) Additional items needed are a good stapler and staples. Now, promise me that you and your dad will plan to spend day together to identity and to staple. You'll enjoy this as much as his happiness with the gift. A decent ledger is fine. No need for software. Edit: When is his birthday?

to CCF! That is really a very nice thing you are doing for him. Quote: What are some things that you guys do This is what we do in our household. I collect classics (and now medieval) and my husband is a modern guy. I have a danco album that contains for my special interests (2 and 3 cent pieces), https://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/pr...ansco-album/ These are reserved for the special coins near and dear to me. We also have Eagle three ring binders http://www.air-tites.com/eagle_proo...m#Slab_Album that give us the flexibility to put what ever pages we want in them. The 20 pocket 2x2 page might be a good option. If you choose this you will need 2x2 cardboard flips, https://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/pr...-coin-flips/ The nice thing about the flips is you can make notes on the cardboard. Software wise, I use an App on my iPad and then export it to excel. If you are not that interested in keeping up with pricing, then excel might be the easiest thing for him to use. I have not used anything else so I would definitely take a look at what John1 has mentioned.

2x2 holders, stapler (get a "lay flat" model so you dont have to crimp the staples down flat - if you dont crimp the staples down they can damage the coins in the page behind plus it makes it easier to insert and remove the 2x2 in the pocket page) 20 pocket pages & binder make sure EVERYTHING is "archive" quality or you could cause negative chemical reactions when using for long term storage for sorting and organizing you can use http://www.numista.com - easy for anyone to use and it's free. great search features for identifying and keeping track of everything. you will also need a Krause or Charlton catalog if you intend to look up values. have fun!

Welcome to Coin Community, Sophia. This is a wonderful thing you're doing. What you should do, in addition to figuring out a physical organizing solution, is help. The value of what you'd give him by pitching in and assisting with what will be a fairly long and tedious job however you do it would far exceed the simple value of the tools you could provide him. And then you can post lists of the coins you see, so we can help alert you and him to items with potential additional value. These abound in numismatics, and there may be gems in the rough there which you're unaware of as yet. You get to help your father, he gets to more certainly realize the true value of his collection, and Coin Community gets another contributing member. I'd call that a win all around.

Sophia, I agree with superdave...we can help here even in future...We need close up pic's though---don't post any far away pictures as we can't say anything then---I know it seems crazy one pic at a time or even in some case Half of coin is one pic..Yu can post under grading section or even others as well....then yu can write on white holder what grade the coin community gives....Post and tell us how yu think we are doing...

Hi Sophia,
A coin ledger would do to keep track of what he have, its a handy way to keep track of what is in his collection without the need to learn any software. And since he has large collection, it maybe wise to keep the duplicates in coin tubes with coins of lesser value and store the more valuable ones in holders and inside the binder to protect it.
This maybe a big project to organize, so take the time to separate and not rush to get it done.

arianzo, Thank you. Too many members assume that the jargon of the hobby will be understood. New people should be afforded simple answers at first. Pictures can help. Links to examples can help.

I would only add to be careful when transferring to 2x2s - avoid getting fingerprints on the coins, don't sneeze on them, try not to bang coins together (like while dumping a box of coins out onto a table).
