Poll Question
I posed this question in another thread and jeffrose suggested I create a poll. I was going to post this in the US Classic Coins section but thought the Main Coin section might be better since the premise encompasses both classic and modern proofs.

Here's the question I posed in the other thread:

For those that said they prefer proof coins with no toning I'm curious if that applies to 19th century proofs as well or is it only 20th and 21st century proofs where you feel that way? I'm asking because I've observed a number of times where there may be some kind of a psychological break point in the age of a coin and the acceptance of toning.

In my own case I too prefer that Mercury dime proofs not have toning. It just seems odd to me if they are toned. In my mind they should be bright, frosty, and free of any spots or toning. However on proofs from the 19th century a lack of toning makes me feel the coin is sort of artificial looking. As if there is no way a coin that old could not have some kind of toning.

Perhaps this is just my own perception but I'd be curious if others share similar experiences.

For example, those that say they prefer proofs coins to be free from toning what are your thoughts on these two Barber dime proofs? Both are the same year and where graded the same by PCGS, PR65.

Which do you prefer?

Proofs.--Toned,-Or-Not-Toned?--What-Is-Your-Preference?

Proofs.--Toned,-Or-Not-Toned?--What-Is-Your-Preference?

Proofs.--Toned,-Or-Not-Toned?--What-Is-Your-Preference?

Proofs.--Toned,-Or-Not-Toned?--What-Is-Your-Preference?

Poll Choices
I prefer proof coins without any toning no matter the date
I prefer proof coins with toning no matter the date
I prefer proof coins with toning but only on coins dated before 1916 (Barber and earlier)
I prefer proof coins with toning but only on coins dated before (insert where you draw the line)
I don't like any proof coins, give me business strike or nothing at all.
 Other (explain in your post)

You gave me the perfect choice - toned only before 1916.

I like all Proof Coins; with or without toning. That said, it does need to have nice eye appeal.

with the eye appeal comment made by Canadian-Banknotes

I like proof coins either way and judge them on a coin by coin basis.

I like proofs- some designs look good with toning (like the Barber dime you posted) and some do not look good in my opinion (like ASE proofs) It really depends on design.

I love toned proofs as long as they're attractive and same goes with business strikes.

Re: the two Barber dime examples.
I like the toned better.
Toning is the eventual destiny of coins.
Try as may to prevent it, it is bound to happen.
Learn to accept that metals, save for gold, will tone.
And US gold coins (NOT the bullion) will tone due to the copper content.

I guess I should have included a choice that said "I have no preference on whether a coin has toning or not". I'd think that would cover the people that mentioned "eye appeal" as their higher priority. However "eye appeal" is in the eye of the beholder. In other words a toned coin may have great "eye appeal" to one person and not to the next.

What I'm hoping people are asking themselves as far as the poll questions is which holds greater "eye appeal" to you personally in general, toned or untoned coins?

I prefer Cameo proofs with no toning, and non-cameo proofs with some toning.

You know, that's a good point - toning would detract from the cameo, which is glorious on its' own.

For the most part I'll agree with you on this. Once in a while a nicely toned cameo can look great too. Here's a shameless plug for one of my cameo proofs that I feel is a good example of this.

A proof coin that has toned is unique and depending on it's eye appeal would determine if it would be acceptable or not. I like proofs, I love cameo proofs but only have one cameo proof that is toned and it is one of my favorite coins.
