I like books too. I have a few on coins and some bound numismatic journals for the articles, but the main part of my library is auction sales catalogues.
My earliest is from 1918 and there are some great coins there, but then there should be as the collection belonged to a guy who initially classified the series I'm most interested in and when he sold his collection the majority were illustrated (which was quite uncommon at the time, due to expense) for future reference.
Yeah, I use electronic records too. But photos in catalogues are often much better quality than online (particularly with pdfs of scans) And it's easier to jot notes or place markers in a book.

Tom I haven't bought any auction catalogs yet. There are multiple catalogs out there for US coins and currency. I have some old Heritage catalogs they sent me back in 2009/2010. I really like the high quality pictures and descriptions. Stack's Bowers has some nice catalogs too. Next year, I might look into getting a subscription to one or both of their catalogs. -MV

I have a collection of catalogs from significant auctions for my primary US coin series interest - US Commemoratives. Almost every auction of US coins includes some commemoratives, but I only pursue those catalogs that feature a noteworthy collection that is well-described and illustrated. There have been some outstanding commemorative collections put together over the years and the catalogs of their auction provide me with great historical information and insights into the collectors who assembled them.

commems what are some of the catalogs you have that you really like or showcase the classic commemorative series? P.S. If you ever put all your write-ups in book form it will have a place in my library. -MV

I've been buying old auction catalogs pretty heavily the past year. I'm more after great sales as described by Adams and Davis, along with the prices realized. I also like any major collection that has a lot of rarity items or from a famous collector. Here is a photo of one of my cooler items recently picked up. B. Max Mehl - The Durham collection - with PRL With the original Mailing box from Mehl!

Not so much an auction catalog as a fixed price list - but a really hard one to find! Empire Coin Company: Empire Topics, Johnson City, New York, 1958-1959, numbers 1-6, 132 pages, grey card covers. Crisp and As New. The Limited Library Edition of the first six issues of this first Bowers & Ruddy publication, the predecessor of the Rare Coin Review. John D. Wright's - The CENT book - autographed to "My good friend John W. Adams" from J.D.W.! Early Half Dollar Die Varieties 1794-1836, Al Overton, 1967 first edition, 349 pages, well illustrated, rarity levels, maroon cloth, dust jacket. The first edition of the standard work although the numbering system was changed in the second edition.

MeadowviewCollector - is also going after some great books One of his latest acquisitions is the Briggs Seated quarter and one I'd like to replace in my library, it's a tough one to find anymore. I got talked out of mine by a friend, and sold it to them for $20.00 back when they were still easy to find, I never replaced it, and now they go for well over $100 if you can find them. I found "MeadowView" a copy of this fantastic reprint: The original printing was 500 copies but most burned in a fire, making them quite expensive today, the reprint is also pretty hard to find, but if you look in the right places they pop up for a fair price, I think his copy was sealed in plastic wrap still.

Westcoin has been extremely helpful answering my questions about different books. I am thankful for his insight and help. I would have paid more for the Stewart book had he not pointed that copy out to me. Enjoy your Sunday everyone -MV

Quote: what are some of the catalogs you have that you really like or showcase the classic commemorative series? The August 1991 sale by Superior of the Larry Shepherd collection is a great read, as is the January 1994 Superior sale of the Harold Rothenberger collection. More recent sales of note include the Heritage August 2004 sale of the JFS Collection and the Heritage February 2005 sale of the Bruce Scher Collection. Each of these catalogs presents an incredible, high-quality set of US commemorative coins. The two Heritage auctions feature wonderful color images of each coin in their respective collections.

Just received 25 more good EAC auction catalogs this week, plus, Bower's latest Colonial coins book, most of the John Ford Auction catalogs, another edition of Crosby's early American Coinage (one more I didn't have) now I'm down to needing only the original (at $1500+ that might not happen). Added another edition of Overton's bust half dollar book, finished picking up the Roger Burdette Renaissance 3 book series, the complete collector series by Bowers, a few more Rare Coin Review (I only need 1 more to finish that set off (Issue 110 if anyone can help). Early Coopers by Durst, and a fantastic copy of Numisma by Froussard. Been a good month for new book additions to my library!

@ MV How is that Seated half dime book? It's a series that I've found lacking in good information.

I really like the Seated half dime book it's full of historical background, design changes, covers die varieties like repunched stars, doubled dies, overdates, MPDs, RPDs and more. It's not listed on his website yet, but you can email him and see if he has a copy for sale. http://www.kevinjflynn.com/books/-MV
