I have "A Guide Book of United States coins Large Print Edition (2013)". I'm also thinking of getting "Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties of United States coins Vol. I&II".

Which other books are good to have and are easily obtainable (available from publishers)? Or are those books enough?

Mostly I'm collecting coins before 1934 (small cents to dollars, including commemoratives)and I'm interested in different die varieties, general information & history about U.S. coins and any information that helps with grading.

Thank you.

I like the Large print Red, and I like the Mega Red

Then it depends on what series I want a book on, I will
purchase a book for that series.

This site will have a lot of different, might give you
some ideas.

I really like the Mega Red. It's a little unwieldy if you want to carry it around, but it is comprehensive.

"general information & history about U.S. coins"
The Red Book is most likely the best for general info.

"information that helps with grading"
I would stick to the ANA Grading Standards for United States Coins.

"different die varieties"
That pretty much limits you to books that specialize in one issue.
For 20th century coins that's not too expensive BUT the studies are not as in depth as the books covering older issues.
It gets VERY costly the older the issue.
I just bought one dealing with early dimes and that was $170.

The Cherrypickers guides are interesting but their use is limited to people who will spend hours pouring over 1000's of coins.
Rest in Peace

I ordered Mega Red 2017 and ANA Grading Standards for United States coins. I didn't know there was massive version of normal Red Book.
Also I found those books at local webstore so no shipping fees or extra taxes .

Next time I'll order more in-depth books about Indian cents, Buffalo nickels and Morgan dollars.

Thank you again for great suggestions.

Rick Snow just had his Flying Eagle and Indian cent book (Whitman Publication) come out this week, in the 3rd edition, so be sure to get the latest one when you go to that series.

I agree regarding the 'Mega Red' version of the Red Book.

Here is the citation, to differentiate it from the standard edition:

Yeoman, R. S., Bressett, K. E., Bowers, Q. D., & Garrett, J. (2016). A Guide Book of United States coins, 2nd Edition: The Official Red Book, Deluxe Edition ('Mega Red'). Atlanta, GA: Whitman Publishing. [ISBN-13: 978-0794843922]

Here is what I said about it on Amazon:

Quote:
5 Stars - An Erudite Encyclopedia of United States coins for the Beginning to Intermediate Collector

By dd27 on September 4, 2016

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase

A scholarly, well-crafted, and accessible text that provides a plethora of facts, figures, and engaging stories about our country's numismatic history, along with most of the contemporary knowledge necessary to become an advanced collector. I say 'most', because, as other reviewers have noted, some coins receive less attention than others. If you specialize in a particular series, e.g., 20th century dollar coins, you might consider a text that focuses exclusively on such coinage.

But if you're looking for a comprehensive text that will provide the essentials on all U.S. coins, with encyclopedic coverage of the most popular series, e.g., Lincoln wheat cents, I highly recommend spending a little more money for this text versus the standard edition.

Nothing against the venerable Red Book, but the Mega Red provides five times as much information for less than three times the price. It's like getting a 1916-D Mercury dime in AU-50 for the VF-30 price. ;O)

I suspect most do not see your in Findland and may not be sure just how available any US books may be there. Of course there is always mail but sending books via mail could be expensive. As to any books on US coins, you should really check out the Whitman Publishers web site. They produce a massive variety of coin books and supplies. However, purchasing direct from them too is expensive. Don't know how dealers do it but as an example at coin shows most dealers sell the Red Book for $10 or $11 where as if you try buying one direct from almost anyone, they are several dollars more.
As I said you should go to the Whitman Web site for examples of what is available then try places like Amazon.com for possible cheaper sources.

Yes I'm indeed from Finland but this bookshop that is located in Finland sells most of Whitman publishing coin books. It takes up to 2 weeks for me to get these books.
Of course company takes its cut, but it comes with free shipping. I checked few sites from US and it would have cost me around 80-90$ for shipping to Finland and then there is additional VAT costs (10%).

Books that I ordered are:

A Guide Book of Unied States Coins, 2nd Edition The Official Red Book, Deluxe Edition

A Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents, 3rd Edition

Official Red Book: A Guide Book of Buffalo and Jefferson nickels

The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States coins

Book about Morgan dollars was sold out, but that will be next one for me to get once it is available.
