ebay auction with less than desirable photos. It looks fake to me due to the surface quality and the date. Any opinions, its kinda late with 33 bids.

Good eye. The first two date digits are definitely wrong as well as the surfaces. If it is real, it has some serious environmental damage.

The left is an image from a ms65 pcgs 1880 cc and the one on the right is in question here. They just don't look the same at all.

That mintmark does not look anything like the real one.

Go to VAMworld and look at the mint mark for VAM9(SAF reverse large mint mark). It's much closer to the one in question. The one offered above for comparison is a maybe a VAM10 (SAF reverse small mint mark) reverse die. Kind of apples and oranges as far as the mint mark size and location. It still doesn't make it right, just closer to a known variety.

Edited for clarity of mint mark sizes.

The coin on the left is an 1880-CC, 2nd reverse and was quiet common in the GSA hoards of the 70's. The coin on the right is the 3rd reverse and was used in late 1879 through 1904. The CC mint used both reverses in 1880. I think it is real.

But you can take what I think and a $1 and get any size large drink at Mcdonalds.

After further review I think I'm wrong about the coin on the left. It is a 3rd reverse with the small CC mint mark while the questionable coin on the right is the 3rd reverse with the larger CC mint mark. I do not know if they used both size mint marks in 1880. Maybe the VAM experts can weigh in.

Yeah the VAM experts will have to chime in on this one. I was comparing the eagle and lettering between the two, how the one on the right looks like it has less detail, even with the circulation wear considered. It just looks a little different, maybe a not so good strike.
