quimpler Valued Member Canada 64 Posts	Posted 01/26/2014 02:57 am I know a guy who has a coin machine business, where you put in a loonie and it punches out a coin from a brass slug that is themed to the venue you buy it at. He let me look through all the loonies he got over the summer, and I sorted them by year and variety. Here's the breakdown of what there was... gives you some idea of what's out there, or at least what people are willing to part with and put in a coin machine. The picture is of the one and only 2012 old style (no laser mark) loonie that I found amongst them. TOTAL OF 6,821 LOONIES, with years and varieties as follows: 1987 x 714 1988 x 475 1989 x 669 1990 x 248 1991 x 74 1992 x 68, 57 parliament, 11 loon 1993 x 131 1994 x 128, 62 memorial, 66 loon 1995 x 134, 45 peace, 89 loon 1996 x 88 2002 x 11 2003 x 27 2004 x 20, 8 olympic, 12 loon 2005 x 149, 21 terry fox, 137 loon 2006 x 190, 23 olympic, 167 loon 2007 x 165 2008 x 127, 23 olympic, 104 loon 2009 x 196, 6 Canadiens, 190 loon 2010 x 74, 2 Saskatchewan, 15 Navy, 24 Olympic, 33 loon 2011 x 123, 5 Parks Canada, 118 loon 2012 x 2349, 1 no laser mark, 29 grey cup, 43 olympic, 2276 security 2013 x 661 Report this Post to the Staff

I remember the validity of your statement was/is the biggest problem with the Loonies and Toonies. There have been a LOT of threads on CCF from US people who have not experienced a dollar coin being forced on them but insisted the "weight issue" was fictional. Finally I asked the Canadians on the forum to chime in and tell people down here that yes - weight IS a real issue. https://goccf.com/t/112063 I see three groups of people on this issue: 1. From the Canadian side of the issue, it is getting to the point that a good deal of the population were too young to remember using $1 and $2 bills so they wonder why we Americans don't want dollar coins. 2. On the US side - for people that like the idea - are people who never had to experience a society where they have only the coins. 3. In the middle are the people who experienced both. Groups 1 and 2 tend to like dollar coins. Group 3 tend to be the people who do not like USING them, or at least would like a choice.
