Hmmm, that's a toughie,
I think the discoloration on the high points is just toning.
I think the weakness of reverse is just from the strike.
I think the luster is strong and unbroken.
So I'll put my neck out and say MS-63

Yes, it is a tough one, and I'm not great at grading subtle differences between wear and strike. The (very) few bag marks are only obvious under magnification. The rim is sharp as a razor. I have trouble understanding how it could be "circulated" and only get this kind of wear without cuts or scratches. It's been in my collection since 1971, and my grandfather had it (raw) before that. Yet the reverse looks flat, and the vertical beads in the crown are not distinct, leading one to think circulated. There are few graded examples on ebay right now, but this one has similar characteristics and supposedly ICCS MS64. At first glance I hedged around a nice AU, but I'm not seeing any wear - MS63 here too.

That ms-64 is a pretty weak strike and would not command the regular price of another stronger strike of that grade. Your coin is not as weak and would be market acceptable as a standard coin since the canadian halves of this design are notorious for weakness in these areas, you should defineately send it to ICCS and NOT PCGS since pcgs will nock the grade down for the weak strike. I think it should go to ICCS, it should definitely get an UNC grade.

I had an ICCS graded MS-63 of these that looked pretty similar--softness in the shield is pretty common.

Judging by the exact same strong weaknesses I would say yours is also a narrow date aswell, also the MS-65 you posted is market acceptable as far as weakness goes.
I still think you should send it to ICCS who knows, maybe you're just bad at pics and the coin is MS-64:-)

I'll bore you with a few more pie plates. I tend to obsess over a certain coin for a while; it's some kind of disease. I looked at all the Heritage examples and so maybe 63, possibly 64 with the right combination of grader, coffee, and day. Heritage has an example that describes "light gray patina", similar to mine I think. I'm still curious what the exact definition of "narrow date" is for the 1948 50 cent; I cannot detect a difference among numerous images. This is the best lighting/angle I could get on the obverse to show hair detail, given my equipment and (lack of) skills. Unfortunately it exaggerates nicks on the nose and chin.     |
