Hey everyone, this is my first post as a collector. I'm learning a lot, but I need some help from the community on a question. I'm sure this will happen regularly, so bear with me.

I received an 1883 nickel WITH 'cents' as change today at a coin shop. I see they can be valuable even if heavily worn (20-25 dollars). I think it may have been an accident and if so, I may be the good guy and take it back.

I'd grade it as Good, but there's a catch: It has a small hole at the top. Is it worth any more than the five cents it was given to me as?

If necessary, I'll upload a picture of it to this post. Thanks for your help!

to the CCF!

I'd say the coin was damaged by the hole, and the coin shop may just give out "junk coins" with change to encourage more collectors, but if you let them know that would show great ethics on your part, if it was indeed a mistake (which I doubt) the owner will probably trust you a lot more and that goes a long way in the future with more dealing you may have with him.

Even a damaged holed 1883 w/cents nickel is still worth about a dollar.

My local coin shop hands out Ike dollars, Kennedy halves and the occasional dateless Buffalo nickel in change, especially to repeat customers. I would guess it was handed out on purpose.

Quick, informative responses. Thank you both. As a 20-year-old coin collector, it's nice to talk to a few others with similar interests. Not easy for me :)

If nothing else, a simple "Thank you" for the nickel on your next visit
will open up a door that will serve you well.

My LCS hands out dollar coins, Kennedy halves, silver cirtificates, Barr notes, and other thisgs like that. They also have a Gumball Machine and for 50 cents, you can get foreign coins, silver dimes, Buffalo nickels, wheat cents, Liberty nickels, and even a silver quarter a times. It was most likely on purpose.

The reason for the hole was possibly someone making a necklase of charm for a bracelet with it. Way back those got famous when people started to Gold Plate the ones that did not have CENTS on them and sold them as if they were a $5 Gold coin. So that was why they started to add the word CENTS on them. Even with that damage, they still sell for a few dollars as a novelty item.
