I love this series, many have cool clashes, as this one does. Probably my favorite US coin design. I would say AU58, although these are notorious for weak strikes. If a weak strike, MS63. I like the toning, makes it a bit different. Not many toned gold coins.

I have no real clue as to grading gold coins, but I will take a run at it saying AU55. And I rather like it.

How does a gold coin tone? Silver oxidizes, but I thought gold was fairly inert. Does the copper in the coin have something to do with it?

I'm in the AU camp as well.
I haven't found any neat die clashes like this coin or Moe's 1813 O-110 yet but I'll stumble across one when I'm least expecting it.

One of the ways that an 'old gold' tone can come about is the result of a coin resting at the bottom of a drawer that has lot of chemically aggressive resin in the wood, and that gets at the 10% of alloying copper.
Old gold tone? Some like it, and some don't; I do.

It certainly isn't my domain, not that I really have one. I would have said an excellent XF.
But what the heck happened to the 8 and the L in Dollar? It looks like someone stole the 8 to make another coin. If we grind off every 8 we come across we'll have an extra dollar in no time.
I don't love it but I certainly don't hate it. I wouldn't want one or I might get the bug.

sel_69, the coin is in a PCGS slab, so no way I can get an accurate weight, but there are no concerns of authenticity either. This is a very heavily counterfeited type though, but the counterfeits that come in for grading dont have die clash marks, or so I was told by an NGC grader.

Nice AU 53 coin.
The toning is caused by chemical reaction with the 10% copper in the coin.

AU-53 for me, please.
I prefer the bright gold color versus toned. But I also like to think about the coin's story that the tone alludes to.
