About 18-24 months ago, I posted a couple threads regarding trying to get 1,000 common, circulated Eisenhower dollars to use as a "treasure" for my grandkids. I've been sending the kids on a number of "geo-caching"-like adventures where they have to find and figure out clues, secret codes, do physical challenges, figure out locked boxes or combination locks I've designed, etc. Sometimes, they find a key, or a game, or another clue... [for example, one of the simpler ones for the younger kids is a jigsaw puzzle they have to put together... but when they look at the completed picture, they'll find hidden (very small) numbers that correspond to the alphabet, and the message from that says "turn the puzzle over". When they turn the puzzle over (they have to figure out how to do it without it falling apart), they find their next clue. But, the older ones are getting to an age now it's time to wrap it up. Well, the advice at that time on getting the Ikes was "go to your bank," which I did. I was told at a number of branches, "Sorry. We don't keep them and are not allowed to order them." I picked up one here and there, but ended up with 40 after about a year... so I gave up. I then decided that, even though they're a lot smaller, I'd use the Presidential dollars instead. A little cleanup and they'll look like a treasure of gold, which the kids would really get excited about. But... guess what? Same story from the banks. I was told, "You'll just have to come back every few days to see if we have any. We're not allowed to order them." My response: "AAARRGGGHHH!!" I really can't afford to pay a significant premium to buy these coins for this purpose. I'm not wanting them for an investment... they're just for the kids to find, and then they'll just spend them over time. So, any advice on getting 1,000 dollar coins will be greatly appreciated... well, any advice other than "Go to your bank." LOL Thanks!

You need a new bank! Lol I have never had issues ordering coin (Ikes excluded) in any quantity I wanted. Why not instead of 1000 dollar coins get like 40 real silver coins like Silver Eagles. Then they will have a real treasure! If you insist on the dollar coins....go to a vending machine company. They use tons of Pres. Dollars for change in their machines...they might sell you some.

Many find silver in them there rolls and bags That may be why some are willing to pay a little premium. Hope this may help with the reality of ike bags. BTW to CCF

Quote: don't know if you want to pay a small premium for the Ikes but there are a couple of 1000 coin bank bags on ebay for $1259.95 shipping included. (and $25.80 back in ebay bucks) If I did the math right ... the seller only gets about 7 pennies per coin... Net-Net- Net Who knows there might be a Morgan in there. Did you say you got 40 coins in a year? ah..... The cost of gas ... for all those bank runs?

I personally have some good luck on my only bank run. First shot (only) was about 6 months ago. Got Kennedy half, and Ikes to the amount of about $150 FACE. Some one had dumped 30 minuets before I ask. ( want you to know ... all Kennedy rolls were Broken open. Those teller are not too unwise. But they missed one 40% coin. he-he. Now.... Hooked on IKES

Wonderful way to get the kids active and possibly interested in coins. You can read about the woes of coin roll hunters here, "Ever been denied rolls/boxes at a bank?" https://goccf.com/t/171200 and maybe get a few ideas. I have only asked for Ike's a few times and am usually disappointed, I got some nice Mirror finish ones a few months back, not hole fillers but nice up-grades. I get small dollars all the time thou. One big mistake is to go to the wrong branch, call them and ask which branch is the place to pick up coins in bulk. The Vending machine company is a good suggestion too, but again a phone call is usually cheaper than the gas to get there. I'm going to have to post my argument about WASTING GAS!... 1. It's your gas to waste 2. It's a fun hobby, how much gas is wasted on other peoples hobbies: Driving up a mountain every weekend to go skiing, going up in a plane just to jump out with a hanky tied to your back, heck even hiking usually means you have to drive somewhere. Call all the banks in your area and if they require you have an account with them, go in with 11 $100 bills and walk out with 1000 coins and a new $100 savings account, then you will be getting interest on the $100 at least so that might off set some of the gas ... well maybe a few drops

Just a suggestion, order 4 $250 boxes of the new presidential or NA dollars from the mint. They are $276 a box. The premium would be $26 per box, plus $5 for S&H for a total of $109. You could spend a lot of that on multiple trips all over the place going back and forth to banks trying to find $1000 in golden dollars.
You can still order boxes of Harding, Coolidge, Taft, Roosevelt, McKinley, Cleveland (1st term), and Arthur right now. The 2014 NA dollars come out in 3 weeks.
Oh yeah, don't forget that this purchase would qualify you for a free tote bag! (Free with purchase of $75 or more, while supplies last, one per customer per order.)

A bank says they can not order Pres dollars? Really? Yeah, get a different bank. That is simply a head teller that is being lazy. The bank I work with at work says they can not get me boxes of halves because they are not made for circulation anymore, yet they have tons of Pres and will order them. THAT is a bank now wanting to deal with customers ordering coins. Like Capital One. Quote: Hope this may help with the reality of ike bags. Dude, the reality is you are one of the only people in the known universe that can actually get bags of Ikes anymore.

DO NOT accept that they can't get them. As a bank teller, I'm here to tell you that they most certainly CAN be ordered. Likely scenario was that they are not part of that particular bank's regular inventory, and the teller you spoke to has no idea of the process. Either that OR they assume you are a roll hunter, which they are well accustomed to, I'm sure, and are afraid of getting stuck with them when you're done with them since few others will want them. Ask to speak to the head teller or a manager, and explain your situation. We don't normally stock them, but ordered a box in before Christmas per a customer request, and are still stuck with most of the rolls. It's true we can't specifically request SBAs, Sacs, or Prez dollars, or just new coins; we are at the mercy of what the armored service sends us. To be sure, Ikes are out of the question. I think this is a great suggestion, and then all 1000 coins would be new, gleaming, and golden! I say go with this. TomOhio,
My credit union has around $2000 worth. At least that's what they told me the last time I asked for Ikes and Kennedys. I would love to help you out, but I would be afraid to ship $1000 in coins. It would definitely have to be sent registered. I can call them on Monday and ask if they still have them.
EDIT: I still think the best route is buying the boxes from the mint. Like I said, you know that every coin you get will be new and untouched.

Some banks do get their coins from a 3rd party though instead of from the fed who may not have the halfs. There really are some banks that couldnt order them or it would cost them enough they refuse too, but there are others who are just being lazy and dont want to order them.
