I just got 7 almost complete books of Jefferson nickels 1938-1968. I only wanted the barber and Mercury dime books but I had to buy everything the guy had for $120. My question is regarding the Jefferson War Nickels 42-P/S, 43-P/D/S, 44-P/D/S, 45-P/D/S The 54 silver nickels are very dark in color, from sitting in a old whitman album for long time? Does that make them only worth melt value? I know I can't ever clean coins cause it ruins them? But is there a way to get them to not be so yuck without ruining them. Or just leave them filthy?

Probably melt or a small premium over melt. I would just leave them alone.

I would have paid that without even blinking. You can turn around and sell the incomplete books back on ebay if you take anything out, and recoup some of your cost. Buying in bulk you get more for your money, so who knows what you could get for the books you don't want?

shadz I tried to not blink he thought he was ripping me off. 1 of them is a complete album, most of the others are only missing -4 coins, but I also got a barber, liberty head or morgan dime album 1892 to 1916 with 27 slots filled with barbers and Mercury dimes in wrong slots which is what I wanted and he threw in three rolls of uncir Roosevelt dimes and a toe nail clipper. I dont sell anything on ebay maybe I should, I hope to hoard stuff to trade them for lincoln cents or Mercury dimes or error coins.

Wow great pick up. You definitely got a nice collection there. I would love to have a 50-D or some War Nickels. Basically all I'm missing at this point

The dark toning is normal for silver in my opinion. Silverware in a drawer will oxidize and turn black thus why folks routinely polish the silverware. Controlling the toning becomes the challenge; how much air and humidity will the coin see? Check the backs and see if there is even toning.

The toe nail clipper is what makes the deal! That made me laugh out loud. It seems like a totally random item to include in a bulk coin deal.

I wasn't leaving without the toe nail clipper .. long story but it was type of place that sells that kind of stuff not even remotely a coin store.. the owner had a failed coin shop a decade ago....now I have about 34 albums and several full rolls of uncir I got off of him in total. mercs, barbers, ros, LWC, lc, buff I will trade latter for more merc and LWC my two favorite things....
