http://www.numismaticnews.net/buzz/...ate-in-doubtThe mint wants the 74 d aluminum cent back. Their argument can be extended out to all pattern coins really. There's a few more articles about this as well I didn't link. Another great decision by the government and mint *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Really, who gains anything from this? It's like being told you've won the lottery than someone taking all your money.

No one gains anything which is what makes it even dumber. In fact the government loses out on millions in taxes from its sales over the years as well as spending 10s of millions in legal fees now

I really don't know what the guy expected, he should have known that the gov. was going to confiscate it when he first learned he had an aluminum cent. I obviously don't condone them consfiscating any aluminum cents from collectors, but I thought it was ridiculous that the gov. would allow only this one guy to sell it. In the end it makes no difference to me if the coin goes up for auction or not, I don't have the money to buy it.

That didn't take long. Quote: No one gains anything which is what makes it even dumber. In fact the government loses out on millions in taxes from its sales over the years as well as spending 10s of millions in legal fees now Good point

When this first surfaced my gut was telling me the government would ultimately seize it.

The owners of the certified 1974-P aluminum cent received no such confiscation letter, how is this any different? That being considered I think they will end up getting to keep the coin, though they may not be able to sell it at open auction.

It almost appears as though the actions of the government are to prevent anyone from prospering, even if they might benefit. Cut off your nose to spite your face. Prosperity or oppression, you be the judge.

Quote: It almost appears as though the actions of the government are to prevent anyone from prospering Ding ding ding As far as the Saddle Ridge hoard goes, I've seen the mint quoted several time saying they have no interest. But you never know.

Irrelevant, they're dead and security now a days makes smuggling out coins almost impossible. All of these were made the same way yet there's selective prosecution for which ones to get because those in power have the others.
If anything someone high up probably decided they want this but don't way to pay the auction price so they'll use millions in tax payer money to get it free
