At what point does a details grade not really say anything? This may be it. If you sold this coin, what would you net grade it--G4?

The rot is heavy the grade is crazy but hey I'm not forking out 179 bucks for it either.

Yeah...I'd take a G4 w/ honest wear for far less $.

If there was no corrosion on this coin, I would grade it be EF-40. What a shame. I'm not seeing how this got AU-53? As for what would I pay for an L filler in this condition? I would not even pay the going G price for this coin because I would just be looking to replace it later, and then what do you do with it?

XF Details is more like it. Taking into account the severity of the corrosion/eye-appeal, AG money is what I'd pay.

Actually I agree with the seller's grading. I don't think that there is much wear on it. It's the 'details' that are the problem, which relegate this coin to a dealer's 50 cent junk box. A TPG would not grade this coin.

I think ANACS got carried away with this one, best I would say would be EF-40 with details grade. I would only pay a G-4 price for a heavily corroded coin as this one.

Sell that coin?
I think it's a good candidate for a YN giveaway prize to get someone excited about the hobby. I don't see any monetary value whatsoever, since virtually *everyone* above raw beginner level would consider it no more than an ugly hole filler to be replaced at the earliest affordable opportunity.

I'm thinking VF-35... either way its higher than a 4.

If it's really visible that there is a L in there, I would make a sad face and pay $20. (Whoever's selling it probably won't sell for $20 though.) If not... I'll still pay close to $20, probably. An IHC that early is a cool coin to have in any condition ...Seriously, I probably wouldn't buy this coin in a slab for any money. Raw, possibly. Quote: I think it's a good candidate for a YN giveaway prize to get someone excited about the hobby. This is probably the best one can do for this coin (if we're able to talk the seller into selling it relatively cheaply, and if we get it out of that slab somehow - resale value or no, it's also a good candidate for a coin that a YN can touch as a piece of history).

You know it's an L by the gap between the 1 and the base of the neck I just wouldn't buy a coin with that much corrosion. I've been looking at some nice 1790's large cents that are VG to fine details in the $80 to $139.00 range and they have a lot less corrosion. Rather buy one of those since last week when someone posted one here. Something about the 179 got me hooked.

I agree with Pennynickelguy - this is a coin to avoid.

Must have hit the ground early it it's life. The long bar of the "L" easily seen but, heavily corroded coins are sad and I wouldn't want one in my collection
