Looking to get into possibly cherry picking some varieties. I know VAMs are popular and I have a book on those. It's old but useful, most I think are stupid.

But I know bust halves and Mercury dimes are big too. Is the Cherry Pickers Guide good enough or should I get something more specific? Basically wanting types and varieties worth my time. If the coin is worth $50 without a variety, taking my time to find one worth $55 just isn't worth it.

Look into Kevin Flynn's books then he has quite a few on a lot of different sereis of coins. The Cherry Picker s Guide to die varieties is the original "bible" when it came out, and is still quite relevant IMO.

Of course VAMs are hot now, there are many books out on them, I have around 70 different Morgan dollar books alone, in my library.

Your biggest profit margins will probably come from early copper, but they can be a life time of study in themselves.

There are some great Morgan VAM profit picks, like the 1888 Scarface that was found on ebay a couple months ago. The buyer will probably see a profit of over $8K on that coin, the 1878-P VAM44 found a few years ago at the FUN show for $75.00 on the floor, flipped at the show for over $20K.

There are picks out there just waiting to be found, but so many dealers now look for the varieties themselves, there are no where near as many easy pickings left now as there used to be.

Is there a VAM price guide or anything? I have a few common ones in the bank, nothing special as far as I know.

Really want to focus on bust coinage and Morgans. Most of my collections are to the point of only key dates, and I don't have the money for that. So I'll challenge myself to cherry picking and maybe use those profits for key dates or trades.

VAM View lists prices, but your best bet is to search ebay, and Heritage auction archives, also VAM LINK auctions run by Jeff Oxman.

For a complete book on Lincoln Cents you may want to visit http://www.coppercoins.com and see if they still sell that book called Looking Through Lincoln Cents. There was at one time two issues and I have them both. Photos and explanations for almost every year.
If you go to the Whitman Publishing web site, you would find they publish many, many books on almost every coin. They are the ones that publish the one you have, The Cherry Pickers Guide.
Odd about Mercury dimes though. Only one book on them that I could find and sort of outdated. Can't remember the name of it but as I said, very outdated as to varieties and errors.

Carl was it called The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes by David Lange?

That book was made available on David Lawrence's website http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index...rcury-dimes/

I have a physical copy of it. The photos in the book are in black and white.
