I have been spending a lot these last few weeks and fun money has run low. I can scrounge up some cash if I have to...not eating lunch out this week, riding the bus to work, etc. But, seriously, I have been offered this 1935 1/2 cent. I am not an expert at these old copper coins. Therefore I am not quite sure of the grade since it's older copper. The guy is claiming it's MS, thoughts? What would be a fair price for it? Your alls input will help me decide what I am going to do. I have to give a reply and how much by Wednesday at 9 am! Edited by Nelrak 07/28/2007 12:58 am

Without having it in hand my instincts on first glance were to say, "$200." I guess I'm questioning the originality of the obverse surfaces based on the pics. It might be all-natural happily mottled steely toning overlaying gleaming luster-rich surfaces, but I can't tell. That along with the stray nicks keep me from recommending any bank-breaking outlays. But it is a very nice coin that I would certainly want to own, I'm just not sure I'd pay an MS-63 price for it. Love to hear what he wants for it.

$200 probably would be a fair price but the seller may want rid of it so start at about $150 if you have the funds. It may be an MS60 or better, it sure is easy on the eyes whatever the grade.

Mint State and great strike and details but, I am not sure about the questionable color. Might have been cleaned then retoned? I would pick it up if available for $175 or less.

My first thought was I liked the luster and overall look. However, the hit on the face and reverse spotting sort of bug me. You might want to show this coin around a couple other boards that have some EAC members that might be able to throw in some comments. My apologies if I didn't recognize any previous posters on this thread as EAC. I don't know a whole lot about early copper, especially if it has been messed with. Try the PCGS and/or NGC boards.

I think that the coin has been retoned. I won't say its been cleaned though, just something about the colors. (Could be and probably is the pictures) If I had seen this on ebay, I would of bid it up to about $150.00, taking a chance on it. Nice details on teh coin thats for sure, the mark on the cheek is in a bad place though.

It looks cleaned and AT'd to me. It has pretty nice eye appeal, but I'd pass.

Hmmm, I am going to check around still. He's down to $180 firm, which I am gathering is not a bad deal from most of your input. He says that it hasn't been "heated" and give off some rainbow toning with mostly blues and reds. I am going to HA and look at other graded coins to see if there are any on there that have similar toning. Thanks and keep the opinions coming. Decisions, Decisions...if I didn't need it for my type book it wouldn't be as big of a dilemma as it appears to be as nice as any I have seen. It appears he's a bad photographer or may have over-enhanced the pictures using Photoshop or something. Here are some additional pix he has. This one is suppposed to be more representative of the coin: These are the same views as I originally posted that have/have not been enhanced.

I don't know much, but if he says it's MS63, I'd think it would be AU. I like the luster on it...maybe it was dipped? I like the blue toning on it. I'm pretty sure that you would always be able to sell it pretty easily because a lot of people like the blue toning on copper coins. The RedBook lists MS60 for $350...so think why the major discount? If you really like it and it feels right for you, then go for it.

He said I can return it within 7 days if I don't like it for any reason, so I may as well go for it and I'll take it to my local shop and get their opinion. Thanks all! I'll post pics upon receiving it!
