Any idea what may of caused this? I've found coins with plier marks, smashed by hammers, etc. This almost looks like someone "burned" or was trying to etch something.

Maybe a metal instrument, shaped like a golf tee but with a ladder-like pattern on the side, was pounded against the coin with a hammer multiple times.

Ya - knew it wasn't an error. Posted it out of curiosity - and some people like "damaged" coins like this.

It isn't glue as the metal is indented. What ever it was had to be hot metal as the indents are smooth and similar on both sides.

I do have a error coin I want to confirm once take a decent picture of it.

For some reason it looked raised to me the way it came up to the rim .

someone with spare time and acetylene torch and a propensity for torchering coins with hot objects .

Looks to be a strange set of vice grips. I see some teeth marks in it so that's the only thing I can think of

Maybe someone was using it to rest a soldering gun tip on it.
