I have zero experience with shattered dies so I don't know if the characteristics here are 'normal' or if this is a counterfeit - contemporary or modern. I know that none of the characteristics match anything in Flynn & Zack, neither the known repunches nor the 5 counterfeits listed... Obverse: Reverse: (yes the reverse is weak and muddy. Details There is a die chip in ICA of AMERICA: The 1st T in STATES is definitely repunched, as is the 1st 1 in 1861: But I think the most telling is the O in OF is wrong and the star lines: What do you all think? -----Burton 50+ year / Life / Emeritus ANA member (joined 12/1/1973) Life member: Numismatics International, CONECA Member: TNA, FtWCC, NETCC, EveryCountry (online) coin club Owned by three cats and a wife of 40+ years (joined 1983) Author: 3rd Edition of the Sample Slabs book, https://www.sampleslabs.info/

I believe it is counterfeit because:
1) All the lettering seems to thin 2) Mushy details 3) Porous surfaces
The weight is very close but my gut says I would pass on it if offered to me for purchase.

I'm no expert on these; I just noticed things by doing side-by-side with a certified coin. I also find the repunching very interesting. Obviously, they made corrections to the die, which suggests to me there were using methods from the same era, ie not a modern repro. If it's a counterfeit, I hope it's contemporary.

When I was looking at the original post, my mind was screaming that something wasn't right. Then after seeing DVCollector's post, your coin is undeniably counterfeit. Everything is wrong, just wrong. The details are not smooth and crisp, but mushy and sloppy, and the letters and numbers are everywhere, the wrong size, and poorly put into the die. Sorry to say this, but I'm pretty sure it is counterfeit.

Yeah, my first thought was that it is a counterfeit, an easy-to-identify one at that. The lines in the shield look all wrong with varying thickness in different lines; also very crudely formed. The star looks crudely formed. The shape is irregular in places. The date looks odd and deformed. I'd say it's a fake.

How to tell if it's modern or contemporary?

Looks fake to me. Everything is just off, especially the lettering and date.

It is an obvious fake, and it is a known contemporary fake.

Can either of you (Conder101 or Vermontensium) point me to an online reference of known contemporary counterfeits?

There is none that I know of, but I know of two people working on references on contemporary counterfeit trimes.

So now there are two more books I need for my library and they aren't even published yet? I'll put them on the list along with your v2 Slab book. Sigh.... I want patience and I want it NOW.
