Got this about a month ago, but it's tough to take photos of it. I finally gave up and posted what I've got. The photos are a little duller than it appears in hand, but not much. It's probably been over dipped in its lifetime. Curious for your opinions, I think AU. This final photo shows the die polish lines on the reverse.

I'm thinking AU as well. Perhaps 53 or if it has good luster, 55.

I am going to say AU-55. I've always loved the look of Lafayettes, but they seem to cost a pretty penny when it gets to attractive higher grades!

Most of them I've seen have been dipped at one time or another. The over dipped ones are usually washed out and dull. No matter how tempted you are don't dip this one.
Still a nice coin. Leave it alone.

Nice coin! I'd say AU-50 to 55, & I agree, most coins of this era have been dipped at one point or another but this one looks great to me, I wouldn't try dipping it again. This is one I'm still after! Beautiful coin! On a side note, I live on the "Lafayette Trail"... and yes, I know there's a million places named after him in the country, but everytime I pull onto the road I see the big "Lafayette trail" sign, and I really want one of these coins more and more. Also, on the redcoats retreat from Saratoga to Boston, they quite literally marched past my house... Kinda neat. And likewise Layefette marched troops from Albany to Boston and back (a few times). So I've been after a nice example of one for a while.

Oh yeah? Well I drive past a street called Silver Maple on my way to work every day. Makes me think I should be stacking more silver.
I don't plan to dip this puppy. It fits my set well. I'm happy with it.

Congrats on picking up a Lafayette! There's just something about the heft of a silver dollar that is always appealing!
I would agree with your assessment that the coin has been dipped a number of times in the past. I would place it's grade in the XF-45 to AU-50 range as there does appear to be a fair amount of wear/metal loss on the highpoints.
I am seeing a greenish hue on the bottom half of each side of the coin. Is it simply an artifact of the lighting used for your images?

Well selected classic US silver commemorative. I tend to agree with XF45 to AU50 grade wise ... and certainly agree that the surfaces have likely been dipped in the past. I always enjoy seeing photos of this coin ... the Lafayette Dollar holds a special place the series in commemorative of a special friend of the USA. Congratulations on your new acquisition. David
