You have to have close ups of the 6 to tell.

I will try again tonight... I suspect it had something to do with me using the zoom on the ipad to take the pictures and then when I use the optimizer the pics just get smaller and smaller...(only my best guess)

Castor! that's cool that you saw those! I want to take some new photos of the coins to see if I can get things to show up a bit better on here... but I'm going to pull out that coin once again and take a really good look at it for the clashes you have just pointed out!
Ohhh now I'm excited... Thanks!

Okay so at this point I have put just the zoom on the date... I'm also hoping that the pictures are big enough for others on the forum to see... I also had another look at that '46.. and wow was I amazed I keep looking at the photo I provided and had no idea you could pick out the clashes from that... I'm amazed.. This one I consider the full design This one I consider only a partial design And of course this one I consider no design at all just wide date

Nice coins, nice pictures... the 'no design in 6' is unfortunately not a precursor of the die states that produced the two later 'design in 6' coins... the '6' is too high.

Yes you're right it's not... but for the "set" it will have to do until I can find one that is suitable...

Ah, a perfect thread to continue on! So what I've learned about 1946c, compared to the immediate preceeding years, 1946 fifty cent had a measly mint-reported obv/rev dies of only 24/30, not quite so many possible varieties (thank goodness). The placement varies for both the "4" and "6" in horizontal and vertical positioning while the "19" remains fixed, as well as either the flatback or round "9". A. Upthread Ag had early attached great photos of the "evolution of the hoof through 6" - From a small die chip inside the "6", then an added die crack, then the large die break (my example as well). B. Narrow date, round 9. But as this coin is AU or better so I don't understand why the upper portion of the 6 is so heavy? Is it possible for no traces of double lines to be visible, if doubling occurs? (Sorry for the dumb question, but my intent is this may become a helpful resource for others in the future as well ) C. Round 9. Earlier when I was attempting to identity either wide or narrow date I hadn't notice the vertical variation of the "4". This one is much lower than the "4" in the following photo and both are "wide dates" as the "6" touches the tip of the hoof. D. Another example of a heavy 6, low grade. (more other years in a few days)

I can't say that I have ever noticed that 'fat-tailed 6' before, I will look through my coins to see if there are there or if it is a Western Canada only thing.
B.T.W.- a very nice 'hoof in 6' which has a low 4 and a low 6 compared with the other pictures.
