So, going with my AU+ 7070, here is a recent potential addition for the draped bust slot. I realize this coin has some granularity, but the fact of the matter is that problem free AU+ draped bust cents are all $2k and over at minimum, and cracking something that valuable out of a slab for the set is just too risky....so I decided to compromise on this absolutely beautiful, yet slightly granular example. I don't have this coin in hand yet, but am hoping that the granularity is not readily apparent to the unaided eye....I guess we will find out. Anyways, thoughts on grade and value for this piece? Grnularity isn't too bad. I would say AU-50.

Looks like S-257, berries 6, and 5. Short fraction bar. R-2. I would grade AU details, average- for surfaces, net VF20-25. Value $ 550-850.
A nice coin in spite of the obvious impaired surfaces.

It looks like AU details for me. If it wasn't for the granular surfaces, I'd grade it AU-55. Very nice large cent. The granularity doesn't kill its eye appeal all that much.

Great eye appeal despite the micro porosity.

Beautiful coin Johnny and one that I'd love to have in my collection. I'm at AU details.

thanks guys. The seller called it unc details, as he said he examined it closely and could not find a trace of wear. Even though he is reputable, this is still the SELLER's assessment. I paid under $600 for it, so I am ok either way...I just wish I was better at telling the difference between some strike weakness and actual wear. The coin is so evenly toned and otherwise flawless that it is really tough to tell.

It could very well be UNC Details. At the very least, I couldn't go lower than AU58 Details :-)

Nice looking coin. I can't afford stuff that nice but I did just buy my first early copper 5 min ago and am happy as I'm sure you are. There is something about breaking that 200 year barrier that just feels good

I guess (granularity) means textured look?

technically, it is a form of corrosion. I'm not an expert as to what caused it, but it amazes me that the rest of the surfaces are so well preserved.

That's beautiful! I suppose I'm the only one who actually finds the granularity appealing. I think it adds a really nice texture to it.
