Hopefully, this isn't a repeat topic... A favorite of mine, almost always seen boldly struck from a fabulously intricate, detailed die. Just 200,000 of these were minted. Colligo ergo sum

Overall design of both coins excellent, but some minor points on the artistic accuracy leaves something to be desired on the 5 Pesos.
The cylinder housing and front bogie seem to be pointing in different directions.
Sailing ships also make good subjects for coin design.

That 1999 Canadian coin was a quarter, if I remember correctly. In the 1980's Canada minted two commemorative silver dollars with steam locomotives on them. The first, the 1981 Transcontinental Railroad issue, managed to make the engine look like a child's toy. The second, the 1986 Vancouver issue, was much better from both an aesthetic and technical standpoint.
I agree that the perspective is not absolutely perfect on the Mexican piece, but I'm much more put out by the lack of a tender.

Compared with the two 1980's dollar coins, the later $20 issues have relatively tiny mintages, yet they've remained affordable. Those of the most recent series (sans holograms) are especially attractive.
Liberia has also in recent years struck a "History of Railroads" series that's colorized, if you like that sort of thing.

The 4-4-0 steam train is the classic design and has been used on currency and the occasional coin. "The General" and "The Texas" were 4-4-0's involved with The Great Train Chase during the Civil War and their images have been used on all kinds of things including silver bars and coins.

I had read that before (it's in the Krause guide as well) but had forgotten. Thank you for pointing that out. Likely a contributing factor to these having become a bit pricier than other Mexican issues of the era.

SilverTowne makes a 4-4-0 tribute one ounce silver round. Here's a link to their promotional photo of that item: http://www.silvertowne.com/popup.as...00003_1_.jpgI do have a one ounce bar showing "The General" tucked away somewhere, not sure who made that one....

I like the idea of collecting by topical subject matter, I have not started a collection like this yet, and I do like Steam Locomotives! I've thought about doing Cats on coins or Space subjects, but both of those have so many, I'm at a loss as to where to begin. I tried doing a stamp collection with the space theme, but so many stamps, I was quickly overwhelmed with choices. Thanks for sharing all these neat coins!
