Hi guys...can you tell me what would make this cent corrode so much...The corrosion is about 1/3 through the cent.

Yikes!! I've found coins similar metal detecting on the beach. Just a guess though.

It may have been a lamination error to begin with.

My first thought was "Lamination!" but the environmental damage makes me think otherwise.

I agree. Lamination error. Note the straight line direction vertically on the reverse.

No! Don't throw it away! Even though it is environmentally damaged, it is still a severe lamination error that is worth something. Let some other experts chime in to determine value.

I do sell lamination errors. At the moment, from the current photo's it's worth $2 to $5. Perhaps more. It is worth more than a "normal" 1916-S in that condition. It might, might be worth as much as $15 dollars. So don't throw it in the garbage!
