I believe it is but I'm not sure with this variety.
This is a remarkably nice specimen for a pocket change find.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

If you are searching for these, you might want to keep a running record of the two different RDVs to see what the circulation is showing. How many of each type are you finding? That might help to see how rare the different reverses are out there? Quote: A note on that site mentions this: Description: Two deep valleys in the flame. Comments: Proof style Reverse So this maybe a proof retired die, but I don't think they would ship one to Denver to continue using? So more information might help to determine if it is rare or not? I would save all that you can find until we know more about this die issue. If not valuable, you could spend them later?

I have the 5th Edition of the Cherrypicker's Guide. It says: "Made public just before press time, these are not very well known. The reverse on these dimes was first used for the 1968 Proofs, on which both RDV-002 and RDV-001 are common. Largely restricted to Proof dimes for the next three years, the design appears on just a few 1969, 1970 and 1970-D circulation strikes, and so far seems to be rare. After 1970 this reverse became the standard for all Roosevelt dimes from all mints through 1980." I have seen a couple of them on ebay. By the way - I am assuming that it is allright to quote from a book as long as credit is given?

Quote: So this maybe a proof retired die, but I don't think they would ship one to Denver to continue using? I would assume that like the 98,99,and 00 WAM cents. It is a case of a die hubbed with the proof hub being sent to Denver by mistake instead of San Francisco.

That would make sense. But it is was a hub issue, then there would be many dies with that design from Denver. So saving them till we know for sure will keep us for not saving them. Release them when we know for sure if they are common.

Yes, it absolutely is FS-901. FWIW, I sold an XF 1970-P example for $5.50 months back. I also don't believe it is as rare as the CPG made it out to be. The PCGS price guide also seems to be greatly inflated.

Quote: But it is was a hub issue, then there would be many dies with that design from Denver. No because all the dies were made in Philadelphia, so it would just be a case of a single die or maybe a couple dies that were hubbed for San Francisco getting mixed with dies being sent to Denver. Same thing as with the 1998 and 99 CAM dies intended for business strikes accidentally being sent out for polishing, frosting, and then on to San Francisco where they were used for proofs. It is a hub issue but only a couple of dies are involved.

I have also saved this one. Except for a couple of quarter die cracks, it is the only find I have made in a while! I think it is neat that you found one, too.

I openly search for these..as for rarity..probably something in the future will come out about them.. And Coop's. theory about retired or somewhat similar proof reverses being sent to the denver mint its hard to say... Maybe denver ran out of reverse dies or well who knows... But its a very obvious coin when you get it in your hand naked eye obvious.. This is what I call..the fun stuff!! Hahaha

I'm confused....didn't 1970 start the new "two deep valleys" flame design? If so, then why would this one be special? I went through $60 in dimes last night and found five 1970 dimes and they all had the "two deep valleys" design like the one pictured above. I gotta be reading something wrong or not understanding. Help?

Agrippa - the only thing I know about this is my quote mentioned above about this dime.
