FYI;
There are three different 1999 ten cent obverses on these coins. I suspect the dies might have been mixed up with the dollar coins making the dollar "Mules" a few years back.

As far as I know there are only two. One with the lettering closer to the rim and the other normal. What is the other?

I have been holding my breath waiting for more responses here. Turning blue now!! Every now and then there is information about a decimal coin variation that is news to me. (Decimal variations - my hobby) 1999 ten cent variation is news to me. Can anyone elaborate?

Do we know how many of each. Is the close to the rim scarce?

I'm not sure of the mintages. Someone else in the forum may know.

I had also heard that there were three variations - close to rim, 'normal' and further from rim. Apparently the RAM was experimenting with die pressure and design changes at this time and the different alignments were a result of this experimentation. However, I don't have examples on hand to confirm this. Might be an interesting area to investigate more fully.

You're right. The letters are close to the rim on one than the other but there's one in the middle as far as distance. The numbers are different as well-short tailed "9"'s vs longer tails.The Far and near are easy but the middle distance one is harder. I heard about it in Sydney while I was there.

I have 2 coins on this year variety, either it might be the far or the harder one with 1 coin is interesting characteristic on reverse like "3 1/2 claw"..

Are you sure it's not the 1999 $1 coins you're thinking of - there are supposed to be three obverse varieties for it. I'm only aware of two for the 1999 10 cent and from my own observations the large portrait/text close to the rim accounts for maybe 4% of the total mintage).

They both look like text far from rim to me, and I don't think there is a middle distance. What do you mean 'not include the near/close to rim'?
