So, I bought this off of ebay for $35 RAW. The seller claimed he had acquired a lot of MS ihcs that had been stored in kraft envelopes for many years, so acquired some unusual toning. I bid on several of his coins, but this was the only one that I won...I especially needed it as an upgrade for my set. I new it was high grade and had some toning, but was amazed at how wild the toning was, and how strong the luster shows through beneath the toning. Personally I LOVE THIS COIN!! I am really tempted to replace my 7070 IHC example with this one. My pics don't do it justice, but at least gives you a feel for this beauty. I realize a top end TPG may give it a "questionable color" designation, but I feel confident it is as the seller stated....years of storage in a kraft envelope. what are your thoughts? and grade?

That's a nice looking coin.
Is that a little die crack at the top of the reverse? -- west top of shield.
I think I am lousy at grading but...I'll give it a shot and say that it's MS68. (I'm here to learn.)

62, details, questionable color (due to a dip being improperly washed).

MS-63. The color does not look artificially applied or the result of an un-rinsed dip, IMO. I love it!

I assume you are kidding with the "MS68" grade. The highest grade given to an 1891 by PCGS or NGC is MS65. This coin does have a few minor hits and dings, most noticeably below the chin....so I think this alone would preclude a 65 even though none are really visible without a loupe. However, the luster is in a league of its own. I spent some time looking at 64 and 65 examples of this coin, and none I saw competes with this coin as far as flash and luster are concerned. This surprises me as I have seen many flashy lustrous IHCs....they just don't seem prevalent in this date.
Personally, I think this coin as far as surfaces go is in the 63 range. However, the extremely strong luster and the attractive toning for the date may carry it to a 63+ or a weak 64.

Taking a second look, I change my grade to AU58 and give it about a 50% chance of grading clean.

Nice John!
I'm at 63RB and am inclined to believe the seller. The toning appears genuine to me at least.

MS details. I don't think this one has a shot at problem free slab.

I couldn't care less about what the slab says, I just know I've seen a candidate for the prettiest '91 I've ever seen.

Definitely going with AU58 after looking at those pics, and do not think it will grade problem free due to the splotchy blue toning... at PCGS, I mean.

Really hard to tell with that toning. I will say MS details Questionable color.
