I am NOT trying to rain on your Find, but there is a man, who obviously needed the money and sold the roll, NOT knowing the full value of HIS property and that is a sad thought that especially the elderly are selling coinage for currency to survive and some, like this man, have no clue as to Exactly what is the Real value of the coins HE cashed in............ Happy for you and your Big Score, thoughts go out to the man who really needed the money and because he was NOT aware of the real value, has less than 10% of what he should of had, had he known the lesson of coins and there value in Todays market...........Enjoy your found silver 160 Quarters.........

You mean like try and help the guy by telling him his quarters are silver and worth over 600 bucks ?

I know it's a little technical, but there's an abundance of nice doubled dies. Especially in the 30's and 40's. Do you have a strong magnifier that you can use to take a look at the devices?

Just for fun what would YOU do if your GFS Mom said the guy came back into the store saying he had made a "terrible mistake and accidentally redeemed some silver quarters earlier this week" and wanted to know if he could get them back?"

Would your GFS mom tell the truth as she knows EXACTLY what happened to them? Would YOU give them back?

What if the police came in to the store and said "we arrested a known coin thief and during his "confession" he said he had redeemed at this store some rolls of silver quarters that he had stolen from a little old lady." Would the store and your GFS mom be honest?

It's times like this that you learn more about people through their actions than through their words.

2 scenarios.

Customer comes in with coins wrapped in rolls.

He says I have $40 here to pay my bill.

Cashier takes them sight unseen and on his word that there is $40 there and not a bunch a washers.

Cashier assumes all of the risk and if they are solid silver rolls rule in favor of the cashier, customer forfeits all rights.

Customer comes in with coins wrapped in roll.

Cashier opens them up to count them and sees they ar=e solid silver and says "You know these are silver and worth more than face"

Customer says "I just want to buy some cereal and bread"

One time rule cashier has next dibs on them in accordance to company policy.

I don't know what I was thinking yesterday when I spent them does not hold up in a court of law.

If they were stolen I think we all would hate to have are coins dumped at a bank or store but there is no way to prove that 160 1932-1964 quarters out of the trillion (ok I didn't actually add them all up) were yours so I suggest every member get an electric engraver or number punch get and engrave and counterstamp all of our coins to provide provenance

My comment was not about what was the legal aspects of this but what was the morally correct thing to do. A single, or a few silver coins, in a roll would not raise a big red flag. But four rolls of nothing but silver quarters? Something's fishy. Come on man!

When informed, some people would return the coins, some would take the "too bad, so sad" route.

Personally, I have a conscience. I like that.

I have been reading this thread.. I guess I am confused.. It seems as if the overall here is the OP did something wrong.. I dont see where in anyway the acquisition of the coins would be a bad thing... Point being... Go to the bank by coin rolls for searching find xx dollars face value.. Is it criminal? No absolutely not.. Regardless of the original owners reason for cashing in the coins were is beside the whole point..was it a kid? Who had no clue? What makes anything here the OP's fault? Nothing? Stolen not stolen or someone cashed in a collection they had no knowledge of? I personally would love to find rolls of silver coins... I found a wyoming silver proof quarter in circulation.. Should I have returned it to. The grocery store because the original owner maybe didnt know it was more valuable then a quarter? Plain and simple its money..if someone picked up a dollar on the ground...no obvious place it came from should they turn it in? Naw plain and simple theres no conscience required here.. The GF's Mom became aware when she broke open the roll... Theres 100's of examples one could use here.. Basically congrats on the score and enjoy!!

I am not saying the OP did anything wrong and hope he enjoys the find. Nobody has done anything wrong in this particular situation as far as I know.

Going to the bank and buying rolls is one thing. For those rolls, there is no trail beyond the bank and the armored car company. A few silver coins found in a few rolls is a great find, no matter the source.

For the 100% silver rolls that were "cashed in" at a grocery store that's a different story and situation. The cashier could identify the customer, it's also most likely on surveillance video. The coins were immediately ID'd as silver and were snagged by the cashier, too.

That's when the "what ifs" I've mentioned played into this. This is a situation of where the cashier knows EXACTLY WHICH CUSTOMER cashed the coins in at a specific check stand.

My comments were "WHAT IF's" regarding how would the cashier react when asked about the coins IF the former owner returned shortly after realizing he had made a terrible mistake (or by the police if it happened to be a theft situation and the thief confessed to cashing in the rolls at that store)

Would the cashier say "gee, I don't know what happened to them I was so busy" or would she be honest and say "I'm sorry about your mistake but I think I may be able to help you get the coins back".

As my Mom used to tell us kids when we were confronted by a morally challenging situation: "let your conscience be your guide".

They didn't immediately open the rolls. They were opened long after...when they needed quarters to be opened. It's not my fault someone turned in the coins that were worth more than face. Sorry to offend some of you by giving these quarters a home. Didn't know the feedback would be portrayed this way...

I think some of you folks are being a bit high-handed.
Some guy gives 40.00 to a store, they happen to be silver and someone else discovers this. That's it, that's all.
Playing "what if" to test someone's moral values is stupid and trollish.

I've seen this kind of thing happen a couple to times when people reported they got lucky.

The people doing it should stop doing it.

My thoughts are for ALL BAG ROLL BOX HUNTERS. Collective morality opinions Please ================

Should I return my LOWBALL(s), Morgans, Peace(s), ASE(s) 2001, Buffalo Indian Dollar, 2001 Buffalo Commemorative, and several .940 Ikes etc.,etc., back to my Branch Bank?

More to the point. Anyone care to say they (personally) have returned Silver back to the BANK?

I will say I am 90% sure I have spent or DUMPED (some) .400 Ikes, just to get rid of the GREASERS === on my first bag.

It was my ignorance.

I am 100% sure I dumped about 100 Grease Filled Die coins. They looked awful on Obverse == near DMPL on the Reverse. . Believe I could have sold them for up to many hundreds on ebay as Error coins.

It was my ignorance.

No way I will ever pass the conscience test with BoK

That's over 500 dollars right now in silver. I have no idea why someone turned them in for face. Nonetheless, they have a home now!

Happy for your find.

Wouldn't worry too much about morality testers.

If (went) a good thing falls their way === That will be their own personal test. Maybe then they will come to the CCF and share their good conscience with us all.
