I'm new to collecting and am trying to get a better sense for the things that affect coin grades. This coin, for example, seems to have good detail but is marred in a few places along the edge. What effect is that likely to have on grading/value? What sort of grade might the coin get from a reputable TPG?

VG8 details, rim bump, could net a 6 or a 4 on a lucky day.
Rest in Peace

1895-S Morgan, very tough date
That one is a little banged up, VG Details (basically not gradable)

Might be worth $200. - 300. to somebody, even in that shape.

JMHO, -Thanks for posting it.

Welcome.

If you're new to collecting, this is probably not the best coin to starting off with, at leasr uncertified. The 1895-S is a favorite of Morgan counterfeiters, and there's something about that "5" that doesn't look quite right to me (within the limitations imposed by these photos) which may call the whole date into question. If it's being sold online, that'd be even more cause to be wary. A coin like this might be more confidently bought only after you hsve some experience to rely upon.

Welcome to the CCF shoover4. I've edited your title to be as specific as possible instead of 1895-S raw coin. Proper titles will get your thread more attention :-)

Thanks, all. This is very helpful stuff. I picked up the coin at an auction against my better judgment (I had intended to buy only TPG coins). Lesson learned and, fortunately, I didn't dramatically overpay.

At least you do not have to worry about an added mintmark with that date
